Summer Begins Thursday, First Ozone Action Day Friday

Reduce automobile use, don't fill up your gas tank and take it easy to keep the air clean.

With the start of summer comes the first Ozone Action Day of the season

Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) announced Wednesday that the combination of sun, increased surface and upper level temperatures, and a southerly wind make conditions favorable for ozone development. Ozone Action Days alert residents to times when active children and adults, and people with respiratory diseases such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.

SEMCOG recommends taking the following steps to help keep the air clean:

  • Refuel the night before. If you need to refuel on an Ozone Action day, fill up in the evening when the weather is cooler and don’t “top off” the tank. If you have a newer vehicle with a capless gas cap, that will lessen the chances of gas fumes releasing into the air.
  • Reduce automobile use on Ozone Action days. Plan to carpool, use public transit, walk, or work at home.
  • Relax on Ozone Action days. Choose the lawn chair over the lawn mower.
