Still a Kitten, Chico 'Would Make a Great Family Pet'

Chico is part of a litter born after the mother cat was rescued.

Chico is a 6-month-old mixed breed kitten. He was born at a Lake Erie Metro Animal Rescue foster home after his mother was taken in for shelter, said Kay Spielman of Dearborn, a volunteer for Lake Erie Metro Animal Rescue.

Lake Erie Metro Animal Rescue – LEMAR for short – is a no-kill shelter founded 15 years ago by Rockwood resident Sharon Parker. Volunteers trek to Canton twice a month for dog and cat adoption days at , 43665 Ford Rd. The store hosts adoption events from noon to 4 p.m. on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

Sweet-tempered and playful, Chico gives kisses when asked.

“He’d make a great family pet,” said Spielman, holding Chico as he wriggled around trying to get a close-up of the video camera aimed his way.

Chico has had all the required shots, has been neutered, tested for feline AIDS and leukemia and worms, Spielman said. The $100 adoption fee covers the cost of his care.

LEMAR volunteers' main goal is to place all the animals in their care into permanent homes. In the meantime, the no-kill shelter is looking for volunteers who are willing to offer foster homes to cats or dogs (or both). Donations are appreciated in the form of pet carriers; cages; litter boxes and litter; towels; sheets; blankets; pet food; treats; brushes; leashes; collars; bowls; and animal toys. Cash can be donated in the form of gift certificates or payment of vet bills.
