It's really sad to see the directions this comment section has taken. The beating of Mr. Utash wasRead More horrific and senseless. The people involved should receive the maximum penalty allowed by law. I'm not living in the past,, I realize that slavery ended long ago,, but white America has NO IDEARead More what it is like to be a minority and have people look at you with fear and doubt because of your skin color or country of origin. Humans inherently distrust people that do not look like them. That's a fact. We all do it,, even myself,, and I hate that I can catch that twinge in my soul when I'm in a part of Detroit where I could easily be in danger a situation were to occur. We ALL need to realize that there are good and bad people that are our neighbors,, that sit next to us in church or pass on our sidewalks. The point is that racism and bigotry exist today,, we are ALL guilty of it. Those that choose to deny it and blame others for it are the real problem in the world today. Refusing to accept others as equals is the wrong thing to do regardless or race, gender, ethnicity of sexual orientation. What I try to do every day to improve our world is to simply accept people for who they are, expect them to live up to the words they speak and most importantly, Love All! Life is TOO short.

Let me clarify again... I wrote "many in the race" I did NOT write "most" orRead More "all" in the race. I did not group all black people together, I would never do that. There are "many" in my own race that are despicable human beings too. I am sorry if any of you read my comment and thought I was lumping you all together. Believe me, I know there are a lot of white people in those gangs too. My point was that this young boy should have never been allowed to roam those streets unsupervised, where the gangs hang out. That is exactly how they get involved with or victimized by gangs. It could have easily been that child beaten to near-death, look how close he was and his parents weren't even aware. Nobody is safe in that neighborhood, especially if they carry a purse, are talking on a iphone, listening to a ipod, using a cane, wearing expensive jewelry or looking defenseless. It's a cultural problem, it has absolutely nothing to do with skin color, it has everything to do with parents who don't watch or discipline their own kids, that includes the parents of this boy. That is why children end up in gangs, lack of supervision. It is abusive if you leave any young child to fend for themselves, but it is highly abusive if you leave them unsupervised in these dangerous areas where the known gang activity is high.

Matt, thanks for your feedback. I’ll try to soften my dissent further. Doubt if it willRead More satisfy you unless I agree with you, however. Just a little correction to one of your own “factual errors.” Attributing the weather to “Mother Nature” is a common metaphor that is not scientific, nor is it biblical. If it’s really a random impersonal “force” over which we creatures have no control, is it proper to call it “Mother Nature”? That’s why I called it pantheism. The weather is either providence or it’s not.
Daffy Noodnicks April 18, 2014 at 11:08 am
Dale: I don't care if you agree with anything. It is possible for you to engage in discussionRead More without saying unpleasant things about what other people may or or may not believe, particularly when your assigning such things is possibly completely wrong. You not only choose not to do so, you go out of your not to, and have done so for years. Also, "Mother Nature" is an expression (which I did not use) not a statement of supernatural convictions and to take it as something else is preposterous. And religious convictions have nothing to do with the science of climatology. Science is science, spiritual beliefs are a different matter. There a lots of people who I'm sure believe in providence and understand the science of climate change.

TAASMAN....Muslims CANNOT pray in school any more than Christians can. THAT is the point! ReligionRead More has a place, in religious institutions. Schools are about EDUCATION! Teachers are not responsible for religious instruction. I do not believe for one second that mosques came to the church's side without any ulterior motive but that is irrelevant. If "This lawyer" does not speak for anyone in your community then you do not understand the American Constitution. It is much more important than one guy's stupid actions or anyone's real "feelings". The separation of church and state is to PROTECT religion from government. If any school starts promoting any religion then young, innocent children will be subject to the pressure and influence of that religion from teachers and/or staff. "Easter" egg hunt is a Christian practice. Many cities have secular egg hunts and the kids love them. To come to the "church's side" is not as helpful as it sounds. The point is that to take any religious "side" is to prohibit any opposing religious side. To take the side of a Christian church is not insightful at all unless you are oblivious to the protection of freedom. If you are truly an "American", Arab or otherwise, then you should be outraged that the school allowed itself to be used as a corruption and misuse of the freedom that we so love to protect. I am no more or less suspicious of the motives of Muslims than I am of Christians. This is the point that you are missing. I stand to fight for freedom from any religious persecution.

Not too friendly with its own Christian community in what is justifiably perceived as "Dearbornistan" by many who have felt the palpable hatred the Arab News gives press to. It is a shame that the loudest voices will typify a community that no doubt does contain a population who are of muslim faith who are tolerant but fearful of retaliation if they object to those voices.

K. Scott you have hit upon why stores counsel employees not to respond to this type of question onRead More the phone. No salesperson, even the expert, can be expected to accurately diagnose the unseen over the phone. We may know what is likely and offer that but, the customer should be directed to the manufacturer contact (web site or 800 number) or if they have purchased in store/local extended warranty refer them to that group. But, the argument in the article does not consider the assistance during the sale, whether the writer purchased the quality vs low end product or whether the writer took the 'nothing can go wrong with an electronic device plugged into a wall socket' tack and passed on the extended warranty which assures a local company will service them. This rant is less about whether the store responded appropriately than an uninformed writer with a public platform to share less than the whole story for personal gain. This reader would expect more 'customer service' from this media. And 'no' this reader did not personally take this call.

She called the big-box store to ask for help. That was her first mistake, they don't even knowRead More where things are in the store. Customer service died years and years and years ago. The stores are in tough competition with online buying where deep discounts can be offered on itemsRead More that can be shipped from warehouses w which do not share the same cost of doing business as the brick n mortar stores. After last holiday season retailers are restructuring and resizing their staffs just to keep the doors open. Remember, chain stores or, big box stores, employ your neighbors. When customers purchase online or buy only the loss leaders, it is your neighbor that you have out out if a job. This is doubly devastating for independents that have no network of stores to help the ones that falter.the folks still in the job are grateful to have a job and for the most part go out of their way to help within the culture of the store. The author of the original rant should proceed directly to a mirror and stare deeply into their reflection because half of the problem in the original article lies there.
