Representative co-sponsors bills identifying synthetic drugs, easing requirements on superintendent hires.
Rep. Kurt Heise (R-Plymouth) called for support from school board members and administrators Tuesday on bills he is co-sponsoring that would ease requirements for superintendent candidates and tackle the availability of synthetic drugs such as Spice and K-2. Heise spoke Tuesday at a Plymouth-Canton Board of Education meeting at the E.J. McClendon Educational Center in Plymouth. House Bill 5238, Heise said, would open the field of possible candidates for school district superintendent jobs by eliminating requirements mandating administrator certification from the state. Districts still could choose to hire according to those standards, but would be free to explore candidates from, he said, "outside of the normal pool." Board member Mike …

Plymouth-Canton Educational Park Principal Bill Zolkowski will retire after three years in park's top spot.
Plymouth-Canton Educational Park Principal Bill Zolkowski will trade in books for an Ann Arbor beer garden this year. Zolkowski, who served as Park principal for three years, is retiring after this year. School board members and administrators honored Zolkowski during a Tuesday Board of Education meeting at E.J. McClendon Education Center in Plymouth. Erin MacGregor, the district's director of secondary education, said Tuesday that Zolkowski will be remembered as "a change agent," bringing together Plymouth, Canton and Salem High School staff and treating the 6,200-student campus as one park, instead of three separate schools. His next act? Opening and maintaining a beer garden in Ann Arbor as an addition to Mark's Carts, an outdoor food …

Art by local students featured at Plymouth's Biggby this week.
While still seniors at Plymouth Christian Academy, Leah Vuletich and Lindsey Davidson’s works of art already are getting attention. Davidson, who specializes in drawing and painting landscapes, will have a piece on display at U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Livonia)’s Milford office after placing fourth at the Congressional Art Merit Awards. Vuletich, a photographer, already has concert photography slated to run in a nationally circulated music magazine. Local art enthusiasts can catch a glimpse of the pair’s works this week, however, as their art is on display this week at Biggby Coffee in Plymouth. During the week, a dollar for every drink purchased will be donated to the school’s art program, said Colleen Woolford, co-owner of the Biggby…

Changes will take place during the 2014-2015 school year.
Paper and pencil for statewide tests will soon be a thing of the past for Michigan students as they prepare to take a new online assessment detailed during a roundtable Monday by the Michigan Department of Education. The exam will replace the standardized MEAP and MME assessments in math, reading and writing, beginning during the 2014-2015 school year. The MEAP and MME assessments will still be given in science and social studies. But unlike the tests students are used to, the new statewide exam will not have a common set of questions. Subsequent questions will be determined based on how a student answers the previous one. A correct answer yields a harder one. An incorrect responce yields an easier question. The goal is to have students …

I really wish legislators would stop lowering the standards for people in the education field. This is just another way to help bring in people who want to privatize education. Why would anyone trust a superintendent who had never taught a day in their life? I think people should go out and look at districts who have lowered their standards in this way and see what has happened. Why are the …   more ›
