A former Canton resident and her ex-boyfriend were sentenced to three years probation Thursday in connection with the death of her 19-month-old son in June of 2012, according to an article in the Observer & Eccentric. According to the article, Andrea Nicole Rodgers, 20, and Ryan Keith Moody, 25, have avoided a prison sentence by pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter. As part of the plea, authorities dropped the charge of second-degree child abuse. Rodgers' son died after ingesting prescription drugs. “I think the judge recognized these are not bad people,” Defense Attorney Jeffrey Osment said in the article. “It’s not like it was malicious intent. I think it’s a fair sentence.”

Antonio Jerome Porter, one of three defendants charged in connection with an armed robbery at a Canton Verizon store in which police say gunfire erupted, is facing trial after waiving his preliminary examination Friday at 35th District Court in Plymouth, according to the Canton Observer. Court proceedings for Eric James-Lee Wilkins and Dantez Lamar Boykin-Johnson, the two other defendants in the case, have been delayed until March 18 after their defense attorneys indicated they might challenge weapons charges against the two men, the Observer reported. Three men each face seven counts in connection with armed robbery that prompted lockdown of local schools.
Three suspects were charged earlier today in connection with an armed robbery Monday at a Verizon store in Canton. The robbery occurred on Ford Road west of Morton Taylor Road and prompted the lockdown of four adjacent elementary schools. Eric James-Lee Wilkins, 18, from Inkster; Antonio Jerome Porter, 18, from Inkster and Dantez Lamar Boykin-Johnson, 18, from Westland were each arraigned Thursday morning on seven charges: The arraignment, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was moved to Thursday because of inclement weather. 35th District Court Judge Michael J. Gerou set each defendant’s bond at $1 million (no 10 percent). Their preliminary exam is scheduled on March 8 at 35th District Court in Plymouth.

Three suspects are expected to be arraigned on Thursday in connection with an armed robbery that occurred Monday at a Verizon store on Ford Road west of Morton Taylor Road in Canton, according to a news release from police officials. The incident prompted the lockdown of four Plymouth-Canton elementary school buildings from about 11:30 a.m.-noon Monday as police searched for the suspects. The arraignment will take place at 35th District Court, 660 Plymouth Road, in Plymouth with a time to be determined by the court. According to Canton Police, no further information will be released prior to arraignment.

Mother will not face charges in case involving stillborn baby.
Criminal charges against a 20-year-old Canton woman accused of wrapping her stillborn baby in towels and a garbage bag were dismissed Friday, according to the Canton Observer. Judge James Plakas ruled Friday at 35th District Court that Dunklee should not face charges of disinterment or mutilation of a dead body, the report indicated. According to the report, authorities said Emily Dunklee, 20, of Canton hid her pregnancy from what defense attorneys described as a strict Catholic family because she did not want her parents to know she was carrying a child. A Canton mother is facing charges after her newborn daughter was found dead in the home the woman shared with her parents, according to the Canton Observer. Emily Dunklee, 20, could face up to 10 years in prison on charges of disinternment/mutilation of a dead body following allegations of not immediately reporting the infant's death, the report indicated. Rufus Thomas Brandon II was sentenced to 120 days in jail Monday at 35th District Court in a double fatality that claimed the lives of two teenage girls who were in his car when he drove through a flashing red light while driving south on Canton Center at Michigan Avenue on July 24, according to the Canton Observer. While Judge Ronald Lowe handed down the jail term on Brandon, the judge allowed him to delay serving his time until he finishes his semester finals at Eastern Michigan University, the report said. Grieving relatives asked a 35th District Court judge Monday to hand down a prison sentence to a driver accused of ignoring a flashing red light in Canton, resulting in a two-car crash that killed passengers Brooke Kennedy, 18, and Danielle Beavers, 19, both of Belleville, according to the Canton Observer. Sewejkis' 4-month-old son is in critical condition.
Anthony Sewejkis, 25, charged with child abuse involving his 4-month-old son, returns to court on Jan. 5. His attorney asked for the change in dates during a preliminary examination at the 35th District Court before Judge Ronald Lowe on Monday. Sewejkis is charged with a single count of first-degree child abuse, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Sewejkis was arrested after the Dec. 7 incident, when hospital workers reported suspected child abuse. At Sewejkis' arraignment on Dec. 9, Judge James A. Plakas set the Canton man’s bond at $500,000. The Canton Observer has reported that the baby is not expected to survive.

I can attest to the fact that the 2 boys I know have always lived in the suburbs that had little to no crime in their prospective neighbor hoods.
