When Batman soars across the Gotham City skyline in The Dark Knight Rises this week, it joins the ranks of high-profile superhero movies dominating the box office this summer. The Dark Knight Rises is the final chapter of the critically acclaimed Batman film trilogy by director Christopher Nolan, which also includes Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Today, Plymouth-Canton Patch launches a summer feature, Summer Reading Lists. We'll poll people in the community (book club members, librarians, etc.) to see what they'd recommend for other readers this summer. Given that we're in the midst of a blockbuster movie season with comic book-themed movies The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises, Justin Vahoski of Comic City in Canton is helping to launch the series with some comic and graphic novel recommendations for both older and younger readers. With 'The Avengers' setting box-office records and 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'Amazing Spider-Man' still on deck this summer, Comic City in Canton sees spike in comic book sales.
From an unlikely team of Earth-saving superheroes to a high-flying caped crusader, films based on comic book characters are poised to dominate at the box office this summer, and at least one local business is reaping the rewards. Already, Disney and Marvel's The Avengers has raked in more than $573 million with its crowd-pleasing assembly of iconic superheroes Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Hulk.
