It's become almost as much of a summer staple in Michigan as Tigers baseball. Oberon, the popular Michigan-brewed summer beer from Comstock, MI-based Bell's Brewery, hit store shelves and local taps this week. The wheat ale with a hint of orange and spices, which is distributed only in warm-weather months and has become a mainstay in backyard barbeques around the state, has been a popular summer selection for craft beer fans and mainstream beer drinkers alike. Local bars such as Hermann's Olde Town Grille celebrated the release Sunday night, with the beer tapped at midnight. For shoppers scrambling for last-minute gift ideas, Plymouth merchants offer a wide array of solutions. Doug Fopma of Isabella's Copper Pot has several suggestions for those shopping for home and kitchen items. A slow juicer made by Huron, he says, is a popular choice this holiday. The device extracts juice from fruits and vegetables using a process that creates a higher-quality final product, he said. Another choice is the SodaStream soda maker. This accessory uses its included carbon dioxide tank and users' own tap water supply to create carbonated water. A sample pack of flavored syrups is included to create flavored sodas, or users can try to be creative and mix a variety of fruit juices to the carbonated water for their own creations…

In addition to Canton Township administrative offices being closed today for a furlough (emergency services, of course, will operate as usual), government offices from the township's through the federal agencies will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day. They will return to normal weekday hours on Tuesday. Tickets are on sale for the next Canton Historical Society fundraiser, Beer, Brats and Bands at the Barn.
