Escorted by local firefighters, Santa Claus made his arrival Friday to downtown Plymouth amidst a celebration of lights and music. The City of Plymouth illuminated its holiday tree in Kellogg Park on Friday as local choirs and children's activities created a festive atmosphere to welcome Kris Kringle to town. If you were at the event, be sure to submit your photos here. If you missed Santa Claus on Friday, fear not. You can still catch Santa at his Kellogg Park house throughout the holiday season. Beginning on Black Friday, Canton Police will offer an increased presence at local retailers.
The Canton Police Department will be increasing its patrols at local shopping centers and stores beginning Friday, Nov. 23 through Dec. 24, according to a news release from the department. In addition to regular patrols, police officers will utilize bicycles and semi-marked patrol cars to maintain high visibility in parking lots and storefronts in an attempt to deter criminal activity, the news release said. Thousands are signing an online petitions against Black Friday store opening hours that have been pushed into Thanksgiving Day.
The trend for stores to open earlier and earlier to take advantage of Black Friday sales—even to the point of opening in the evening on Thanksgiving Day—has prompted an online petition drive to give Thanksgiving back to employees and their families. The original petition was reportedly created by a Target employee upset that the retail giant is opening on Thanksgiving and requiring employees to work instead of spending time with their families. Target has locations at 43670 Ford Road and 47330 Michigan Avenue in Canton. Target stores, including both Canton locations, will open their doors at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving. With barely enough time to shake off a turkey coma, hundreds of area residents lined up outside big box retailers as early as Thanksgiving afternoon to partake in the tradition of Black Friday. Shoppers, who lined up 100 and 200-deep in front of retailers like Best Buy, Target, and Kohl’s before the stores opened their doors at midnight, ran the gamut of those looking for random deals to others who had mapped out elaborate shopping strategies. After more than seven months of construction, the new bridge opened Wednesday.
Novi Road between 10 Mile Road and Grand River Avenue in Novi has reopened to traffic just in time for the holidays. The $25 million project included building a bridge over the railroad tracks so traffic could flow without being disrupted by trains. The road was also expanded to five lanes, and walking paths were added on both sides. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon, Novi Mayor Bob Gatt thanked Novi residents, visitors and businesses for their patience during the construction.
