Real BarBQ of Canton delivered a $1,300 check to Laura Varon Brown of Gilda's Club Metro Detroit after a fundraiser from Oct. 15-31 raised donatinos for the group. Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit provides a no-cost program for men, women, teens and young children living with all types of cancer, as well as their families and friends. The environment is very welcoming and is in a home-like setting. “Many of our customers or their families have been touched by breast cancer, so we are proud to be able to support such a worthwhile cause,” RealBarBQ manager Jim Pinion said in a news release before the event. While Ann Romney has taken to the presidential campaign trail to support her husband Mitt Romney, she also has rallied her efforts for another cause: breast cancer awareness. Ann Romney, a native of Bloomfield Hills and a student at Cranbrook, is a breast cancer survivor. In 2008, Ann Romney had surgery to remove a precancerous lump from her breast, according to the Boston Globe. Mitt Romney told CNN that Barack Obama, at the time the president-elect, called to offer his prayers to the Romney family. So while Ann Romney has campaigned for her husband this month, including a stop in Bloomfield Township on Oct. 12, she also has focused her attention on breast cancer awareness. Wait staff will be adorned in specially ordered pink T-shirts, while $1 from entrees, deluxe sandwiches and salad entrees will go directly to support Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit beginning Monday, Oct. 15 and running through Oct. 31. Plenty of pink-themed activities planned this week.
The Plymouth Whalers have plenty of activities planned this week during the team's fourth annual Pink Out! for Breast Cancer Awareness. The Whalers will meet at Lucky Hair Company in Canton on Tuesday in a team-wide pink out. All players will participate in getting their hair dyed pink, starting with older players around 10:30am. Younger players still in high school will report to Lucky Hair Company after practice, sometime after 4pm. On Wednesday, the Whalers will work as waiters from 5-8pm at CJ's Brewing Company at Compuware Arena. All proceeds will go to the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
