Salem, Plymouth Earn Big Week 1 Victories

Prep roundup: Salem routs Ann Arbor Huron at home; Plymouth trounces Lansing Sexton.

Last season, Salem hoped a close Week 1 win against Ann Arbor Huron would be a sign the fledgling football program was about to turn a page. The Rocks, however, failed to capitalize on its momentum, struggling through an injury-plagued season en route to a disappointing 3-6 record. "This year, we're expected to make that next step," Britnell said after his team's win. "Last year, injuries kind of bit us in the butt a little bit. This year, we're healthy. …

Captains Lead the Chiefs to Regional Trophy

Canton's varsity soccer team advances to the MHSAA Division 1 semifinal against Troy.

The captains led the way for the Canton Chiefs, who defeated the host Saline Hornets 2-0 in Friday’s regional final. The ever-dangerous Allyson Krause broke a 0-0 tie on a pretty goal on the second half, and Megan Trapp iced it on a corner kick deflection. Danielle Schendel made several saves in the shutout victory, but was never really tested. Krause spent the game’s first 55 minutes putting the Hornets on their heels. Finally, with 14:50 to play, Krause broke free of the Hornets defense and beat goalie Hayley Reynolds with a terrific shot. The goal came after about 90 seconds of Saline pressure in Canton’s end. “Megan Trapp put a great ball into the left corner. I had two players on my back. I pulled the ball back with one foot and …

Chiefs Blank Pioneers, Advance to Regional Final

The Chiefs will play Saline at 7 p.m. Friday at Saline High School.

The Canton Chiefs advanced to Friday’s MHSAA regional soccer final with a 4-0 win over Dearborn Tuesday at Saline High School. Megan Trapp converted a corner kick 16 minutes into the game to give Canton a 1-0 lead and the Chiefs never looked back. Alexandria Dryden scored just a few minutes later and Allyson Krause scored before the end of the first half to give Canton a 3-0 lead. Taylor Dalian completed the scoring in the second half. Canton head coach Jeannine Reddy said her team lacked intensity early. “We picked up after about 10 or 15 minutes and started shooting,” said Reddy. Dearborn coach Armen Alabakoff said he knew his team was in for a tough game. “We wanted to beat these guys, but what the heck, they beat Northville, man. We …
