Applications are now available for the Canton Community Foundation’s annual college scholarships for Plymouth and Canton students, according to a news release from the foundation. In the past 20 years, the foundation has awarded $540,000 to more than 500 recipients, including adults returning to college to complete their educations. “We remain committed to the scholarship program, especially when the costs of higher education continue to increase and families continue to struggle financially as the slow economic recovery continues,” Canton Community Foundation President Joan Noricks said. Joan Noricks says she'll focus on 'family and personal pursuits.'
Canton Community Foundation President Joan Noricks has announced her retirement in a statement received via email. Noricks' statement reads: I am writing to share with you plans for a change at the Canton Community Foundation and for me. At the beginning of March 2013, I will leave the foundation after 19 years as president and CEO. I plan to retire and enjoy my family and personal pursuits. Among my achievements during this time, I am most proud of growing the endowment fund from nothing, building the organization structures, meeting national standards for community foundations, and above all, working with thoughtful, generous donors who care more for the impact of the work than the recognition. When I was selected to lead the foundation …

The Canton Community Foundation and Giving Hope Women's Giving Circle "pass the purse" to help others.
When Loren Wadington and 32 other women formed Giving Hope Women's Giving Circle five years ago, they had one mission: help disadvantaged women and their families who live in and near Canton. Today, Giving Hope, which is run by the Canton Community Foundation, raises money for charity with "pass the purse" events, including its annual meeting Wednesday at Village Theater at Cherry Hill. In addition to cash, the women brought donations of shampoo and other personal care items. Final figures for Wednesday's meeting weren't available yet Friday, but through the years, the women have helped fund Open Door Ministry's food bank; First Step, First Step, which aids victims of sexual assault and domestic violence; Oakwood Healthcare System …

Volunteering stint at WDET Radio offered a reminder that we really don't know others' struggles.
The woman I spotted bicycling along Ford Road last week was clearly down on her luck. She rode while clutching a white plastic garbage bag which appeared to contain her belongings. The clothes she wore had seen better days: two pairs of pants, a dark pair visible through the large holes in her jeans, and a too-big white sweatshirt. She pedaled fast and a casual observer might have mistaken her for a suburban mom, with her blonde pony tail and white hoodie. The woman wheeled her bike onto the Valero lot a few minutes after I pulled in to get gas. She went to the trash bins and began rooting for returnable cans. Just an hour earlier, I'd received a WDET T-shirt for doing some volunteer work at the radio station. I asked if she wanted it. "No…
