Canton Farmers Market Opening Day Draws 1,000 People

Canton Farmers Markets will run on Sundays, rain or shine, through Oct. 20.

The Canton Farmers Market kicked off its new season Sunday with a record-breaking attendance of 1,000 people, according to Market Manager Tina Lloyd. Attendance was up by 450 people from last year's opening day, though last year's market kicked off a week earlier and fell on a rainy day, Lloyd said. "Fresh local produce was highly sought out and went fast which was disappointing to some folks that showed up after 10:30 a.m.," Lloyd said. "Unfortunately one of our farmers, Hand Sown Farm, was set back a few weeks with their spring harvesting schedule because of the cold temperatures that hit us a few weeks ago, which meant they didn't make it for Opening Day. Special Farmers Markets Get Canton Through Winter

The next Winter Farmers Market is Sunday.

Farmers markets aren't only for summer. Market-goers can find their favorite products year-round at special Winter Farmers Markets at Preservation Park in Canton. The first was in February but shoppers can look forward to one 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday and another April 21. Vendors will be set up in the rustic pre-Civil War-era non-heated Cady-Boyer Barn, 500 North Ridge Road in Preservation Park.  There will be 18 local food growers and producers. Canton Chef Paul Penney kicked off February's Winter Market with a special cooking demonstration. "We're very pleased to be able to operate three markets during the winter months that provide vendors with the opportunity to sell their locally grown products directly to market-goers," said Canton …
