Woman, 41, dies in Sunday accident that caused vehicle to roll onto its roof in creek.
A woman was killed early Sunday in an accident at Interstate 275 and Michigan Avenue in Canton, according to Canton public safety officials. According to a news release from the department, Canton fire crews responded at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday to a serious accident I-275 and Michigan Ave. to find a vehicle rolled over onto its roof, submerged in a creek. According to the news release, Canton's cold water rescue-trained firefighters and paramedica entered the water in wetsuits and forced their way into the vehicle, where they found an unresponsive 41-year-old woman. Man hospitalized after Sunday fire at apartment in Canton.
A man smoking near his oxygen machine apparently caused a fire Sunday at a Canton apartment that sent the resident to the hospital, according to the Canton Observer. The man sustained non-life-threatening injuries after the fire at Lincolnshire Apartments, 44000 block of Trails Court in Canton, according to Canton public safety officials. Canton dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call at about 4:45 p.m. Sunday reporting an apartment fire with occupants possibly still inside the building, officials reported. Canton fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke and light fire from a two-story apartment building. Fire crews were able to determine all occupants were out of the building before entering to extinguish the blaze, officials indicated.

Friday accident hospitalizes two, closes portion of Ford Road.
Ford Road between Ridge and Napier roads in Canton will remain closed through about 6 p.m. Friday so police can complete an investigation of an accident that occurred earlier in the day, according to a news release from the Canton Department of Public Safety. A vehicle being driven by a 27-year old Canton woman was traveling eastbound on Ford Road on Friday, when witnesses reported the vehicle crossing over into the westbound lane and being struck head-on by a semi truck driven by a 61-year-old man, the news release indicated. House on 46000 block of Spinning Wheel sustains heavy fire and smoke damage, but no injuries reported.
Canton Township firefighters responded early Wednesday to the 46000 block of Spinning Wheel after a 9-1-1 call reporting a house fire, according to a news release from the department. According to the report, fire crews arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke visible from a tri-level home. Crews entered the home and found heavy smoke and fire in the kitchen area, but were able to contain the blaze with two hose lines, the news release indicated. Lieutenant Todd Mutchler has been selected as Canton’s new Director of Public Safety, following the retirement of Patrick Nemecek at the end of the month, according to a news release from the department. Mutchler has worked his way up through the ranks to this top position, starting as a patrol officer hired by Canton in 1988. Todd holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Technology, both from Eastern Michigan University. He is also a graduate of EMU’s Police Staff and Command School. Throughout his career, Todd has been active in the department, working several special assignments including Detective Bureau Supervisor and member of the Western-Wayne Special Operations Team. After an intensive assessment center process, Fire Captain Gregory Sprys-Tellner has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Fire Chief, according to a news release from the Canton Township Department of Public Safety. Sprys-Tellner began his new position on Nov. 26, and is scheduled to formally receive his new badge at the Canton Board of Trustees meeting on Dec. 11, according to the news release. Sprys-Tellner, 46, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Clearly University. Sprys-Tellner was hired on to the department in 1987 as a Firefighter, and was promoted to Captain in 2010. Canton fire crews responded about 9 p.m. Wednesday to a house fire in the 8200 block of Sandpiper, according to a news release from Canton's Public Safety Department. When crews arrived, flames were visible from the attached garage and second-story bedroom above the garage, the news release indicated. Firefighters made a quick attack on the fire, containing significant damage to the initially affected areas of the home and garage, according to the news release. At about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, crews responded to another house fire in the 5700 block of Coronation, according to a news release. Canton Township Police are investigating two accidents Wednesday, one of which was fatal. According to a news release, Canton police and fire responded at about 5 a.m. to a report of a single-car accident in the parking lot of Windsor Woods Apartments at Warren and Morton Taylor roads. Police found a car crashed into a parked vehicle at the apartment complex's parking area, the news release said. The driver, identified only as a 55-year-old man who lived in Canton, was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. Canton Fire Chief Timothy Dunn has announced he will be retiring from the Fire Department after 27 years of service, according to a news release from Canton's Public Safety department. Dunn’s last day will be Friday, according to the news release. Dunn first was hired to the department in 1985 as a firefighter. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2006, Battalion Chief in 2007, and Chief in 2010, the news release said. Dunn holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Madonna University and completed Eastern Michigan University’s Staff and Command School in 2007.
