Whalers Take a Shift at Gleaners to Help the Hungry

Fans are encouraged to bring canned good to Whalers game Friday and Saturday.

Most mornings, the older Plymouth Whalers not in school report to Compuware Arena to skate or perform off-ice training at 10 a.m. This morning, the Whalers put in a little sweat equity away from the rink to help the hungry. Whalers Colin MacDonald, Nick Malysa, Curtis Crombeen, Austin Levi, Rickard Rakell, Simon Karlsson and Alex Aleardi – along with Plymouth staff members Denise Ronayne, John Karasinski and Pete Krupsky – packed boxes with canned goods and non-perishable food items for the Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan at their Livingston Distribution Center, located in Howell. The Whalers formed an efficient assembly line, with each member in the line packing two or three cans for food in a box until it was filled…

Plymouth Whalers Alumni Tee It Up Before Hitting the Ice For Gleaners

Whalers alumni play for Gleaners on Saturday at Compuware Arena.

In general, hockey players are cheerfully helpful. That was the tone Friday as 11 Plymouth Whalers alumni played a round of golf at Brae Burn Golf Club in Plymouth before hitting the ice Saturday in the Third Whalers Alumni Game at Compuware Arena. The Alumni Game is being billed as “Champions for a Hunger Free Summer”, with donations going to feed the hungry in association with Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan. Saturday’s event starts with an autograph session at 2 p.m.  The puck drops at 4 p.m. The Whalers are asking for a donation of 10 canned goods for admission. Food Donation at Whalers Alumni Game Pays Dividends

Plymouth alumni game is Aug. 4 at Compuware Arena.

Fans of the Plymouth Whalers appreciate the chemistry of Rickard Rakell and Stefan Noesen. For two seasons, Rakell and Noesen have shown that hard work mixed with grit and talent earns success for both players and ultimately, the Whalers. On Tuesday, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan joined forces with Charter One Foundation, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and other corporate partners at Crowell Recreational Center in northwest Detroit as part of Gleaners’ Hunger Free Summer Campaign. Much like Rakell connecting with Noesen on a crisp pass that ends up in the back of the opposition’s net, the corporate partners efficiently packed 500 mobile pantry boxes with food and loaded three semi-trailers in a little more than 90 minutes. …
