Thanksgiving Tradition: 5 Holiday Drinks

Sharing a cocktail or festive drink while cooking or entertaining is a favorite holiday tradition at the Meier house.

Each year, while we cook, the Meier girls like to mix a holiday drink to enjoy. Thanksgiving is no different. Here are the five drinks we're considering this Thanksgiving. All recipes come from the book Peterson's Holiday Helper, which can be found at Fragments in Highland. With a potato peeler, peel the oranges and lemon in 3/4-inch-wide stripes from navel to the opposite nib. Set the actual fruit aside. Stick a clove in each strip of peel. Put the honey, cider, peels and cinnamon sticks into a 4-quart or larger saucepan (do not use aluminum or copper pans). Warm the mix over medium-low heat until just simmering (20 minutes), then turn the heat to low. Serve the hot cider in mugs, adding a piece of peel and a dried apple ring to each mug…

Poll: Which Holiday Sweet Do You Like Best ... and Least?

Not all treats are created equal. Tell us what you love and loathe.

Taste is highly personal, particularly when that taste is literally on the tip of the tongue. So it's no surprise that when it comes to the sugary, colorful indulgences served this week, one person's delight may be another's disgust. Fortunately, abundant choices at office parties, family gatherings and neighborhood visits let us grab what we savor and skip what's out of favor. In these polls, tell what you crave and what makes you cringe. Pick one on each list. Then feel free to tell us in comments what we've missed.

Vienetta makes me smile, Geri, as does panettone from your people. I assume you modestly omitted other skillfully rendered selections in your repertoire such as struffoli, pizzelle, panforte and perhaps -- be still, my stomach -- Zuppa Inglese. Thanks for commenting. Mangia bene and Buon Natale to you and The Commissioner!   more ›

5 Things You Should Know About Hanukkah

Learn more about the history and meaning behind this Jewish holiday, which starts tomorrow at sundown.

While Christmas is among the top two Christian holidays in terms of importance, Hanukkah is considered a minor holiday for the Jewish people. Nevertheless, it has become one of the more widely celebrated Jewish holidays and is certainly a favorite among children. Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the Jews over the Syrian Greeks in 164 BCE (Before Common Era) and is celebrated by lighting one additional candle in a candelabrum, called a hanukkiah (or menorah) for eight days. The holiday is also known as the Festival of Lights. Hanukkah means rededication and refers to the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after its defilement by the Syrian Greeks in 164 BCE (or BC). As the website MyJewishLearning.com notes, "Beginning in 167 BCE…

Need Some Help Finding a Gift for Dad this Holiday?

A Farmington Hills native, dad and pro golfer shares his picks from local stores.

It's often been said that women are much easier to shop for than men, when it comes to picking out presents. Is this really true, though?  Not so, according to Scott Millman. The Farmington Hills father of three daughters hangs around with other dads on a consistent basis, so you might say that Millman knows a thing or two about what dads might be looking for this season. Millman also has more than 20 years experience as a golfer. Besides leading the U.S. against Ontario in the prestigious Kelly Cup matches last year, Millman has made his way around the area, teaching lessons at the Oasis Golf Center in Plymouth and Swingtek in Troy. As coach, he helped lead the North Farmington junior varsity soccer team to their first ever winning season…

Tips for Photographing Christmas Lights

Here's how to use your digital camera (or iPhone!) to capture the best of the neighborhood's Christmas light displays.

Holiday lights around town range from the simple to the spectacular. Capturing the light shows can be challenging, though. Click on the images in our gallery for some expert advice from professional photographer Edward Maurer. (And if you've got a great display on your house, use the photo to enter Patch's Deck the House contest -- prizes include $100,000 for our public schools and up to $500 for your December light bill!)

Good Morning, Canton! ~ Mary's Farm Market

For four generations, the Hauk family has sold produce (and Christmas trees!) to families in and around Canton Township.

Mary Hauk bustled around the workroom -- she calls it "Santa's Little Workshop" -- Sunday evening inside the farm market her family has run for 18 years at the corner of Ford and Beck roads. She's quick to note that her family's been in the farm business for four generations. She was making wreaths, centerpieces, grave blankets and other decorative items, creating ribbons to festoon the greenery and answering questions posed by family and friends who work with her. Outside, a few more employees were waiting to help visitors select Michigan-grown Christmas trees. Winter hours at the market are 9 a.m to 8 p.m. daily. "No sleep for the weary," Hauk joked, before corralling as many employees as possible for today's greeting. Check back on …

Good Morning, Canton! ~ Cyril Miranda

Cyril Miranda's outdoor Christmas decor offers a simple but classic sign of light during winter's darkness.

Cobblestone Ridge resident Cyril Miranda decided to take advantage of Sunday's relatively mild temperatures to string lights around the shrubbery outside his home. He tossed on a warm jacket over his work clothes and began to work. Shortly after that, Canton Patch happened upon the scene and asked for an interview and a good-morning greeting. Christmas is filled with "a spirit of love and affection," he said. "All the best of the year, we find in Christmas and the love of Christ." While Miranda said he enjoys driving around looking at others' Christmas lights, he demurred about having a favorite. "Every lighting .... is good," he said. If you'd like to record a Good Morning, Canton! segment, email Canton Patch editor Peg McNichol at peg.…

Summit on the Park: Alight With Christmas Joy

Canton Township 33rd Annual Tree Lighting offers hundreds of visitors diversions, delights and, of course, a visit with Santa.

The colored lights sparkled from the moment Santa flipped the switch for Canton's great Christmas tree and hundreds of children and their families clearly enjoyed that moment as well as other delights during the township's 33rd annual tree lighting ceremony.

Enjoyed the Christmas tree lighting at the Summit on Wednesday, November 30, 2011. Members of the Plymouth Christian Academy choir also sang prior to the lighting. I was happy to see you interviewing my granddaughter, Marlena, to ask how she felt about being a part of this wonderful gathering. Looking forward to seeing and hearing her comments that she gave to you that evening. All the choirs …   more ›

Good Morning, Canton! ~ Marion Rozum

MSA Delivery Service co-owner Marion Rozum offers a few suggestions for this giving season.

Marion Rozum is one of those people who seems to be at every charity event in Canton Township. So it was no surprise to learn that the company she and her family own, MSA Delivery Service, recently helped the Detroit Area Diaper Bank take delivery on 250,000 diapers donated by Huggies, which sponsors the newly created National Diaper Bank. MSA is always there to help Marybeth Levine and the Detroit Area Diaper Bank handle large donations, but that's not all the Rozum family supports in Canton. Marion Rozum used her time today to promote the Canton Goodfellows; Salvation Army; Camp A.B.L.E.; and the Miracle League of Plymouth. As she said between takes, "if you can't give a lot, give a little. Every bit helps!" If you'd like to record a …
