Here is a look at some of the events and features of this year's Plymouth Ice Festival.
The Plymouth Ice Festival gets under way just weeks from now, running from Jan. 18-20 in downtown Plymouth. Apart from the chainsaws and scultors, however, there is plenty of fun to be had downtown during the (hopefully) chilly weekend. The festivities are preceded by a pub crawl in downtown Plymouth on Jan. 12. According to the Plymouth Ice Festival website, here is what you can expect at this year's festivities: Greenhills School Ice Skating Rink For the first year at the Ice Festival, families can take a spin around Kellogg Park on a downtown ice rink. No need to bring your skates–they'll be provided. The rink is open during all the official open hours of the event. DTE Energy Hot Spot Warming Tent Warm up in style at the Hot Spot …

When throngs of visitors descent upon downtown Plymouth in January to view sculpted spectacles at the 2013 Plymouth Ice Festival, they'll also find an array of new activities at the yearly event. Festival promoter Sam Walton of Signature Professional Group said in addition to ice sculptures planned around Kellogg Park in Downtown Plymouth, the ice festival will bring a skating rink downtown. The rink, made of a weatherproof synthetic skating surface that simulates ice, allows skaters to use regular ice skates without the risk of mild temperatures ruining the fun, Walton said. "Whether it's 8 or 80 degrees outside, people can come out and skate," he said. "We're really excited to have that on site this year." Also new this year is a …

The University of Michigan Ice Carving Team, one of several local and regional ice-carving squads at Kellogg Park in Plymouth this weekend, raced the clock Saturday in the Plymouth Ice Festival's three-hour carving event. Team member Zach Pomerantz said because U-M lacks a culinary school, his team carves for fun and has participates in the Plymouth festival each year. Pomerantz carved an eagle, complete with a massive wingspan, within the alotted three-hour time period. On Feb. 10, the team will participate in the annual Ice Carving Extravaganza in Ann Arbor, then the following weekend will hold its first on-campus carving competition. For more information, visit the team on the web.

Flurries, pedestrians populate annual winter festival.
The sound of chainsaws, the sudden presences of towering, icy creations and a healthy dose of flurries marked the start of the 2012 Plymouth Ice Festival on Friday in Plymouth's Kellogg Park. The event opened at 3 p.m. Friday and continues through 6 p.m. Sunday. A full schedule of events is available here on Patch. Rep. Kurt Heise (R-Plymouth) and Plymouth City Commissioner Ed Hingelberg ushered in the festival by cutting the ice ribbon with a chainsaw before Northville's Shawn Riley Band braved the cold to take the stage at Penniman Avenue and Union Street to play a selection of classic and Top 40 hits. Heise said he often draws the envy of his Lansing colleagues, who often speak highly of Plymouth's annual ice fest. Icy replicas of the …
