Leis Dauzet-Miller to discuss book Feb. 14 at Plymouth Historical Museum.
Plymouth's rich history is profiled in a new book by a volunteer at the Plymouth Historial Museum. Legendary Locals of Plymouth draws upon stories and recollections of some of Plymouth's most notable influencers, including 102-year-old philanthropist and classic car aficionado Margaret Dunning, according to a news release from the museum. Leis Dauzet-Miller, the author of the book, is a museum volunteer, longtime resident and educator. The book also features stories of the Houghs and Bennetts, who helped put Plymouth on the map; Sanford Burr, whose family history runs deep in Plymouth and Joanne Winkleman Hulce, whose love of the arts has sparked a creative element in the community, according to the news release. Dauzet-Miller will …

Team USA Swimmer Allison Schmitt wins three gold, one silver and one bronze in London.
Editor's note: This is the second in a five-part series highlighting five of the top stories around Plymouth and Canton in 2012. One of the biggest storylines from the Summer Olympic Games in London—and one of the most engaging stories monitored by Plymouth-Canton Patch this year—was the making of a star in Allison Schmitt, a 2008 Canton High School graduate. Armed with a winning style and a knack for strong finishes, Schmitt established a new Olympic record in the 200 freestyle while also swimming the anchor leg of the gold-medal 4x200 freestyle relay as well as the freestyle leg of the world-record setting 4x100 medley. She also claimed a silver medal in the 400 freestyle and a bronze in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay. In August, …

It’s many boys' dream to stumble upon prehistoric artifacts while playing in their backyard. For an 11-year-old Shelby Township boy, Eric Stamatin and his cousin Andrew Gainariu, 11, that dream came true this summer, according to Shelby-Utica Patch. On a warm June day, the boys were hoping to find crayfish while exploring a stream about a quarter of a mile from Stamatin's house on 24 Mile and Dequindre roads. Instead, they stumbled upon an American Mastodon bone. Read more at Shelby-Utica Patch. Sarah Cash of Trenton, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease earlier this year, was given a shopping adventure at Macy's by the Make a Wish Foundation, according to Novi Patch. Sarah's wish was for a shopping day, and what she got was free reign…

Swimmer savors quick visit to hometown before returning to college,
Ask Canton’s Golden Girl what it’s like to have Olympic gold medalist attached to her name and Allison Schmitt flashes the smile that never seems to leave her face. In London, Schmitt had kept her five medals – three gold, one silver, and one bronze - under her bed for safekeeping. But now, less than 24 hours after returning home from the Summer Games where she had become a household name, the events of the previous three weeks still hadn’t sunk in. Ask her when it will, when her Olympic glory will all become real, and the smile returns. “I don’t know when it’s going to sink in,” Schmitt said Tuesday night before becoming the guest of honor at a homecoming rally at Heritage Park. “It definitely hadn’t sunk in when I stood up (on the medal …

Canton, Plymouth libraries each plan book discussions tonight.
The debate over whether Graham Swift's Waterland and Toni Morrison's Beloved belong in classrooms at Plymouth-Canton Educational Park appears to have concluded after a committee recommended this month that the district keep Waterland. A separate committee earlier decided to keep Beloved. In the wake of the widespread discussion in the community about both books, the Plymouth District Library and Canton Public Library planned discussions for both books. Tonight, the Plymouth District Library will have a discussion with area college professors about teaching both books, while Canton Public Library will have a special book discussion on Beloved. Both discussions begin at 7 p.m. Canton Public Library also will have a discussion for Waterland …

Team re-connects with old friends.
It would make sense for the Plymouth Whalers to rest a day after an impressive 6-2 victory over Erie in the home opener Saturday night at Compuware Arena. But that's not the Whaler Way. The Whalers spent part of Sunday walking with the We Do It! For Bobby team in the Walk 'n' Roll for ALS at Kensington Metro Park. The entire Whalers team walked the entire 3.5-mile trail winding through Kensington Metro Park. The team— dressed in its blue jerseys — cut a distinctive path and were highly noticeable to the rest of the teams in attendance. The Whalers are unfailingly cheerful in public. Although former captain Chris Terry is now with the Charlotte Checkers, he has left an long-lasting impression with the Suvoy family. It didn't take long …

Out of nearly 2,000 photos submitted, the grand prize choice wins a Mackinac Island adventure.
Sunsets, family reunions, beaches, city skylines, tubing on lakes, Tiger games, wildlife, Mackinac Island and so much more. Those are among the nearly 2,000 images readers shared over eight weeks of the Your Patch of Michigan photo contest. So it was tough to choose just one grand prize winner from the eight weekly winners, but we did: Beth Potts' snapshot of her new husband, Chris, during their honeymoon canoe trip to Isle Royale in Michigan's Upper Peninsula last summer. "We packed everything into the canoe and he navigated our way along the south shore to Moskey Basin, where we camped overlooking the bay," said Potts, of Grosse Pointe Woods. "We've both traveled internationally and around the U.S., but you don't have to leave Michigan …
