Canton Township, county, state and federal candidates attended a candidate forum Friday night at the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs (Canton Mosque).
Diversity was a key issue the candidates addressed at Friday night's forum at the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs (MCWS), or Canton Mosque. There were 10 township, county, state and federal candidates who spoke to a crowd of 125 to 150 people at the forum, which the Canton Mosque held in cooperation with the Michigan Muslim Community Council. The campaign manager for Syed Taj (D), running for U.S. Congress, spoke on his behalf, although he did make it at the end to hear his fellow candidates speak. The Muslim Community of Western Suburbs (Canton Mosque) is hosting the event in coordination with the Michigan Muslim Community Council.
Local residents and interested voters are invited to the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs (Canton Mosque) 8:15 p.m. Friday to meet and ask questions of candidates running for township, county and state positions. "There will be a short introduction by one of the board members of the Mosque," said Muhi Khwaja, 27, who organized the forum. "After that we'll just do a short intro by each of the candidates. Then there will be two rounds of questions for the candidates and a short response from each as well." Khwaja said the rest of the forum will be open for audience questions. Sunday service at Canton's mosque draws interfaith crowd and messages of unity.
Honor and remembrance marked Sunday afternoon's Sept. 11 memorial service hosted by the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs (MCWS). But moving forward as a unified community was also a prominent theme for speakers during the event. Dozens of people of various faiths attended: Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Roman Catholic, Russian Orthodox and others. All were part of a memorial service and food drive, held in the gymnasium of a private Canton school, Crescent Academy International. Each speaker stood at the podium near two flags: the traditional U.S. Stars and Stripes and the Flag of Honor, which depicts the U.S. Flag using the names of all the Sept. 11 attack victims and emergency responders who died, in bands of blue and red.
