Nearly 400,000 people joined in 2011 — a 25 percent increase over 2010.
With a 25 percent increase in donors from 2010 to 2011, Michigan has received a national award for its dramatic growth in the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors who save and heal lives. Donate Life America presented the "Greatest Improvement in Donor Designation Rate" award to Michigan at the Donate Life National State Team Leader Conference in Grapevine, Texas, announced an Oct. 3 press release from the state of Michigan. Michigan is one of four states to receive the award. It had the second highest growth in donor designations in 2011 among the 50 states and District of Columbia. Michigan became the 31st state to give motorcyclists the option of wearing a helmet under legislation signed by Gov. Rick Snyder on Friday. Senate Bill 291, sponsored by state Sen. Phil Pavlov, R-District 25, lets motorcyclists choose whether to wear a helmet if they are at least 21 years old, carry additional insurance and have passed a motorcycle safety course or have had their motorcycle endorsement for at least two years. Motorcycle passengers who want to exercise this option also must be 21 or older and carry additional insurance. Need $363 million? Who doesn't, right? Well, Tuesday could be the day. The Mega Millions lottery prize has been increased to $363 million, one of the highest jackpots ever. The next drawing will be 11 p.m. Tuesday, so you can still vie for a piece. This is the third-largest prize in the multi-state lottery's history, behind a $390-million jackpot in 2007 and $380-million jackpot in 2011, according to megamillions.com. Earlier this week, Michigan made national news because five tickets, matching five of the six Mega Millions numbers, were sold at the same Meijer store in Northville. Wisconsin's travel website is using a mitten image on its travel website; some Michiganians think Wisconsin should keep their hands off our mitten.
Do you think it's thumbs-up or thumbs-down to Wisconsin's use of a mitten image in its winter promotions? According to a story on Mlive.com, the Wisconsin Department of Tourism is using the image of a slightly misshapen mitten to look like the state of Wisconsin on its winter travel site. This has prompted some good-natured jousting between the folks in Wisconsin who think their state is shaped like a mitten, and Michiganians who know there can only be one mitten state. We went looking for faces of survival. We found inspiration. Patch asked Michigan women and men who have fought breast cancer to share their struggles, tears and triumphs with us during October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer survivor Cynde Lebert, 59, of Canton, tells newly diagnosed women: “You'll be fine. You're alive and that's the most important thing.” Farmington Hills resident Dick Jaeger, 70, is one of the approximately 2,140 men diagnosed each year with breast cancer. "The answer is know your body and don't take anything for granted," Jaeger said. "Every day, I'm a cancer survivor," said Jean Bean, a 58-year-old mom, wife and interior designer from Rochester. DETROIT — Thousands of people from throughout Michigan gathered in downtown Detroit Monday afternoon to hear President Obama speak after the annual Labor Day parade. While the president spoke about jobs, labor and the importance of collective bargaining, Patch asked members of the audience to talk about what they would like to see our nation's leaders, as well as those in power locally, do to help the state. Obama teased the crowd about his upcoming speech on jobs, which is planned for Thursday, saying he would propose "ways to put America back to work that both parties would agree to."
