Abdelkader, a Muskegon native and former Michigan State Spartan, represented the Red Wings on Monday in a promotion with Meijer, the team's marketing partner as a line of fans wrapped around the store's electronics department. Being a Michigander himself, the Red Wings forward said he enjoyed working with the Grand Rapids-based company, located near where he grew up. "I'm pretty familiar with Meijer, obviously, and being local, being from the west side of the state," he said. Fans also had a chance to fire hockey pucks at targets in an exhibit borrowed from the Red …

Justin is a favorite Red Wing player of mine. He is a Michigan kid from the Muskegon area and also played at MSU, scoring the winning goal for the Spartans a few years ago when they won the NCAA National Championship. I wish him continued success with the Wings.   more ›

Former Red Wing Jiri Fischer Delivers Healthy Message to Plymouth-Canton Students

Fischer, Detroit Red Wings Assembly Team bring hockey and fitness lesson to Smith Elementary students.

A sea of red shirts flooded the Smith Elementary gymnasium in Plymouth on Thursday as former Detroit Red Wing Jiri Fischer and the Red Wings Assembly Team introduced students to the sport of hockey and encouraged an active and healthy lifestyle. The message of maintaining health hits home for Fischer, who survived his own health scare in 2005 when he suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed on the bench during a game against the Nashville Predators.  The incident ended Fischer's playing career and he said he uses his experience to teach others to not take things for granted. "When anybody is a survivor of any life-threatening condition, from cardiac to cancer to other things, you look back at maybe what I could have done and what I didn't do…
