Winter Classic, Hockeytown Winter Festival Canceled Amid NHL Lockout

Festival was set to feature Plymouth Whalers and Plymouth-Canton prep teams to complement Toronto-Detroit Winter Classic in Ann Arbor.

The NHL has canceled the Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, scheduled to take place Jan. 1 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor before potentially record-breaking crowds, according to the Detroit Free Press. The NHL and its players union have been in a lockout since Sept. 16 amid a dispute over a new collective bargaining agreement, the Free Press reported.  According to the Free Press, the cancellation also will scrub the two-week Hockeytown Winter Festival at a second rink in Detroit's Comerica Park, which was set to feature the Plymouth Whalers as part of an Ontario Hockey League doubleheader, as well as a match between Plymouth and Canton high schools. Whalers Release 2012-13 Schedule

Home opener is Sept. 22 at 7:05 p.m. against Belleville. Schedule includes outdoor game at Comerica Park in Detroit.

The Ontario Hockey League’s Plymouth Whalers start the 2012-13 season on Friday, Sept. 21 in Sault Ste. Marie before returning home the next evening to face the Belleville Bulls in the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 7:05 p.m. at Compuware Arena. See the Whalers' schedule by opening this PDF. The Whalers’ entire 2012-13 schedule can also be found later today at http://www.plymouthwhalers.com/schedule.html. The Ontario Hockey League released the entire 2012-13 schedule today as well. Saturday remains the primary home date for the Whalers, with 19 Saturday nights leading the way.
