Special Election Wednesday to Pick McCotter's Successor

Residents in the current 11th Congressional District will be asked to vote Wednesday, Sept. 5, to pick someone to fill the remainder of Thaddeus McCotter's term. McCotter resigned from the seat earlier this year.

The much-anticipated special primary election to fill Thaddeus McCotter's (R-Livonia) remaining term will take place next week. The Sept. 5 election is happening on a Wednesday, not the usual Tuesday, after the state set the date in July. In Novi, Clerk Maryanne Cornelius said many people don't understand the difference between the August Primary and this special primary, "Turnout for Sept. 5 is likely to be low. I will be surprised if it's as high as 12 percent," she said in an interview with Novi Patch. In White Lake, Deputy Clerk Cathy Derocher said many people have come in seeking absentee ballots not realizing the notices they were getting were for the Sept. 5 election, not the upcoming November election. Derocher said the clerk's …

Updated: Cassis Concedes, Bentivolio Wins Republican Race for 11th District

Kerry Bentivolio is victorious as the Republican candidate for Michigan's 11th District in the primary Tuesday.

Kerry Bentivolio has declared victory in the Republican race for Michigan's 11th District seat. According to unofficial results from county clerks, Bentivolio received 66 percent of the vote while Cassis received 34 percent.  Bentivolio gave an acceptance speech to a group of supporters gathered at the Sheraton in Novi Tuesday night around 11 p.m. Shouts of "Kerry! Kerry!" welcomed him to the stage as "Eye of the Tiger" played. "We did it!" Bentivolio said. "You did it!" Cheers broke out after he accepted the candidacy. "It looks like Mr. B is going to Washington," he said. Opponent Nancy Cassis released a concession statement just before noon Wednesday. "When we entered this race my husband Victor and I knew we were undertaking a …

Simply curious Herb? I think not. There is an obvious divide and conquer plan in play by the Democrat party, like claiming racism where none exists yet ignoring obvious racism because it doesn't fit your agenda. Or pushing class warfare when most elected officials in both parties are mega millionaires because of the back room secret deals and insider trading that occurs. I am thankful for every …   more ›

Bentivolio Files Complaint Over Cassis Campaign Plan to Give Voters Bracelets on Primary Day

The 11th Congressional District Republican says the plan violates Michigan Campaign Finance Law.

An Aug. 1 statement by 11th Congressional District Republican primary write-in candidate Nancy Cassis' campaign led opponent Kerry Bentivolio to file a complaint Friday with Michigan's Secretary of State. According to a release issued by the candidate, the Detroit Free Press reported that Cassis' campaign "is asking supporters to wear special bracelets displaying her name into the polling places. This plan violates MCL 168.744(3), which prohibits the displaying of any material that directly or indirectly makes reference to any election within 100 feet of a polling place." The Free Press quoted Cassis' campaign as saying they plan to hand out red silicone bracelets bearing Cassis' name on primary day, Aug. 7, "to help supporters get the …

Candidate Kerry Bentivolio Won't Seek Action Against Plymouth Township

Bentivolio, a candidate for Michigan's 11th Congressional District, had urged township to extend deadline for overseas absentee ballots.

Kerry Bentivolio no longer will seek action against Plymouth Township to extend its deadline for accepting absentee ballots from overseas military personnel, his campaign said today. Bentivolio issued an email Monday urging Plymouth Township and Clawson to extend their deadlines after reportedly missing the 45-day deadline ahead of the Aug. 7 primary for mailing absentee ballots to overseas members of the military. Under state election law, all absentee ballots must be received by the Aug. 7 election date. Plymouth Township Clerk Joe Bridgman said the missed June 22 deadline affected one voter, whose ballot was held over a weekend for verification. He said the rest of the ballots were mailed in time. "I spoke with the one voter that is in …

Michigan's 11th District Congressional Races: The Basic Facts

After Thaddeus McCotter decided to leave office early, voters are faced with a confusing voting season. Here's some basic info to help you sort it all out.

The timline, above, shows when the elections for the 11th Congressional District will be held and when the winners will take office.   This year's election for a congressional representative for Michigan's 11th District is quite confusing. Not only will residents vote for a representative to start a new term in 2013, but they will also pick someone to serve the remaining few weeks of Thaddeus McCotter's 2012 term after he decided to leave office early. And they will vote for both on the same day. On top of that, the state has been re-districted based on the 2010 Census, which means some voters will cast their ballots for just one of these elections, while some will vote in both. Plymouth and Canton remain in the 11th District, and …

If this was an effort to elect Cassis, it didn't work. McCotter could make a donation to the special election's cost, but I don't think he can be sued.   more ›

Ron Paul Urges Voters to Support Kerry Bentivolio in Latest Endorsement

Despite being snubbed by local big-time Republicans, Kerry Bentivolio (R-Milford) has picked up two national endorsements for his 11th Congressional campaign.

11th Congressional candidate Kerry Bentivolio (R-Milford) picked up two big nominations this week - one from Ron Paul, and one from Ron's son, Rand Paul. Bentivolio made the announcement on his campaign's Facebook page. "I’m endorsing Kerry Bentivolio because he’ll help lead the fight in the U.S. House to restore individual liberty, free markets, sound money, and constitutional government in America," Ron Paul said in his endorsement. Ron Paul also urged his Republican supporters to make donations to Bentivolio's campaign to help him, "fight back against the political establishment." Ron Paul is a U.S. Representative from Texas. On Thursday Ron's son Rand Paul announced his endorsement of Bentivolio. Rand Paul said, "We need conservative …

Cassis Rolls Out New TV Ad Accusing Bentivolio of Being 9/11 Conspiracy Theorist

Bentivolio campaign denounces "Krazy Kerry" references, saying the personal attacks deflect focus from Cassis record and the issues.

Republican congressional candidate Nancy Cassis's campaign staff has been busy preparing for its upcoming elections for a U.S. House of Representatives seat representing Michigan's 11th District. The Novi resident seeks to replace Thaddeus McCotter who resigned suddenly earlier this month. She will participate in the special primary election in September to temporarily fill his seat until it ends in January 2013. She will be running against four other Republicans: Steve King, Kenneth Crider and Carolyn Cavanagh. There is one Democrat running: David Curson. In August, Cassis will run as a write-in candidate against Kerry Bentivolio - the only Republican on the ticket. They will face off in the November general election against the winner of…
