What Business Would You Like to See Open in Plymouth or Canton in 2013?

This past year, Plymouth and Canton saw plenty of new businesses pop up, including the popular Sardine Room, Panache 447, Jay's Stuffed Burgers and Greek Islands eateries in downtown Plymouth, Penn Station in Plymouth Township and Village Coffeehouse in Canton's Cherry Hill Village. Fun-seeking patrons also enjoyed the new Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park in Canton, which opened in July. In 2013, a new Busch's grocery is slated to open in Canton, and plenty of local buildings still sit vacant, awaiting new tenants. Around Canton: Week in Review

Aid for Westland after a disaster led this week's news.

The biggest news of the week happened when Canton firefighters – and dozens of other agencies from four counties and the state – rushed to aid Westland after an explosion at William C. Franks Furniture Store. A gas leak is the suspected cause of the blast. Two store employees, James Zell, 64, and Leslie Machniak, 54, both of Westland, died. Store owner Paul Franks, a Plymouth Township resident, remains in critical condition at the U-M Trauma Burn Center. Three Canton wrestlers, Anthony Abro, 189 pounds; Ben Poirier, 215; and Ben Griffin, 103, finished a home tournament with 5-0 results. On Friday, power fizzled for about 2,800 of DTE's Canton customers after an equipment failure at a substation, according to a company spokesman. Canton …

Canton Woman Picks 1-1-11 for New Year's Wedding

Amanda Bostic says unique date should be easy to remember on holiday that's one of the most sought after for nuptials.

When Amanda Bostic of Canton and Tony Igram of Linden decided to get married, they wanted something different and Saturday's 1-1-11 was just what they were looking for. "I was really trying to make it easy on him," joked Bostic, who said it'll be easy to remember. "I like numbers. Roulette is my favorite casino game. I'm superstitious like that." The 5 p.m. wedding Saturday is the first two this weekend for Waldenwoods Resort & Conference Center — typically a busy time of year because brides seek out holidays like Labor Day, Fourth of July and New Year's, according to Monica Cheney, a wedding planner at the conference center.
