Plymouth-Canton Community Schools currently offers four world language options to high-schoolers.
Hoping to free up more options for students when it comes to high school electives, the House Education Committee approved two bills in Lansing on Tuesday that would eliminate the foreign language requirement for graduation. Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, in line with the Michigan Merit Curriculum, requires students graduating in the class of 2016 and beyond to have two credits of world language. PCEP high schools currently offers students a choice between Spanish, German, French and Chinese. Two public forums will be held at the Plymouth Cultural Center and at Canton High School at 7 p.m. to discuss the $114.4 million bond proposal.
Four seniors from Canton, Plymouth and Salem High Schools have accepted appointments to the U.S. Military, Air Force and Naval Academies.
While the majority of their peers head off to colleges this fall, four Plymouth-Canton students will begin military careers in U.S. Armed Forces Service Academies. Plymouth High School Senior Linda Erickson will join the U.S. Military Academy, Salem High School Student Ciarra McCarthy will join the U.S. Air Force Academy while Canton High School Seniors Michael Wilyard and Saul Park will join to the U.S. Military Academy and U.S. Naval Academy, respectively. For McCarthy, she has always been interested in the military and after looking at the academy, she said she knew it was for her because of the way it was structured, the academic programs offered and the opportunities presented there. Local girls can shop for prom on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Spring is a busy season for Lisa Benages, a teacher at the Plymouth Canton Educational Park (PCEP) and founder of the annual prom dress sale held at Plymouth High School. Now in its third year, the prom dress sale helps girls purchase dresses for prices ranging from $5 to $20, no dress is priced higher than $20. This year, the sale will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The dresses are a mixture of used donations from individuals and brand new dresses donated from bridal shops. "There's a range of styles and sizes," said Laura Luther, another PCEP teacher and volunteer at the dress sale. "They just keep coming in." The sale is run entirely by volunteers. Two public forums will be held on April 25 to discuss the $114.4 million bond proposal.
Plymouth-Canton School Administrators will hold two informational meetings discussing the $114.4 million bond proposal on April 25. On May 7, voters in the Plymouth and Canton communities will be asked to consider the bond proposal for facility and site improvements to address student learning, technology, health, safety, and security at our facilities and sites. The bond proposal will not increase the current tax rate. If the bond is approved, voters would opt to hold the rate from an existing millage at 4.1 mills rather than decreasing to 3.75, or about $35 a year for owners of a $200,000 home. Art exhibit dedicated to late PCCS teacher Kathy Levi.
Plymouth-Canton Community Schools' fifth annual K-12 Art Show is set to kick off April 27 at the Plymouth High School cafeteria, 4800 Beck Road in Canton. This year’s Art Show takes place over two days, 4-8 p.m. on April 27 and 1-4 p.m. on April 28, and admission is a suggested donation of $5 at the door. The exhibit will feature over 2,000 pieces of student artwork, which are selected by the district's visual art staff. Professional jurors will select winning entries based on composition, creativity, focus, craftsmanship, and technique. Celebrity judges, including elected officials, community arts supporters, and PCCS VIPs, will select pieces based on their own personal criteria. Plymouth-Canton Community Schools reached a deal Tuesday with its incoming superintendent, according to a report from the Canton Observer. According to the report, the district's Board of Education on Tuesday voted 6-0 to approve a three-year deal with Dr. Michael Meissen, currently the supervisor of school improvement and student achievement for Milwaukee Public Schools in Milwaukee, WI, at $212,000 per year, plus benefits. The deal kicks in on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2016. Meissen previously served as superintendent of Glenbard High School District 87 in Illinois, and left his $215,665-a-year job in 2012, according to the Daily Herald in suburban Chicago. Wildcats face Chiefs on Oct. 11; Rocks won't play either cross-campus rivals this season.
The Plymouth Wildcats will face the Canton Chiefs on Oct. 11 in this year's edition of the schools' intense cross-campus rivalry, according to the Plymouth-Canton Perspective, PCEP's student newspaper. According to the report, the two teams have met 10 times in the past five seasons—counting several playoff matchups—with Canton holding a 6-4 edge over Plymouth. The Salem Rocks, meanwhile, won't play either of their cross-campus rivals this season, but will face neighboring schools Northville and Livonia Stevenson. The teams' 2013 schedules are as follows.
