This Thanksgiving, Help Patch Fight Hunger in Michigan

We want to give more to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season. Shop our virtual food drive by Nov. 25 to join the fight.

The season of giving isn't over yet—so why should our Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive end so soon? As such, we've extended our drive supporting Gleaners Community Food Bank until Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving, a day when every American family gives thanks for the things in their life, most of us will enjoy a feast with our families. But there are still many people who don't have enough to eat—including one out of every four children. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and we want to help them with their goal by raising $10,000 through the Patch Fights Hunger online food drive. Ninety-four cents of every dollar you donate goes directly toward feeding hungry people in your own communities. …

How to Help the Hungry in Plymouth-Canton This Holiday Season

One in four Michigan children lives in poverty. In this season of being thankful and giving back, here are ways to help make others' holidays warmer.

The holiday season is a time of joy, and if one's lucky, of plenty. Sadly hunger continues to be a problem, with one in four Michigan children living in poverty and nearly half qualifying for free or low-cost school lunches. Some of these youngsters can only look forward to plenty of hunger pangs, but here at Patch we want to help. Patch.com has launched an online food drive, with all of its 30 Michigan sites participating. Patch is partnering with Gleaners Community Food Bank in this virtual food drive, and the goal is to raise $10,000 by Nov. 24 to help feed local families. Plymouth-Canton Schools Fill Backpacks with Gleaners

Between 45 and 60 students take home backpacks each week filled with food from Gleaners Community Food Bank.

One out of four Michigan children lives in a household with food insecurity, meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from, according to Gleaners Community Food Bank. "One of the things about the communities of Plymouth and Canton is they think we don't have that need," said Kristen Hennessey, food services director for Plymouth Canton Community Schools (PCCS). "But we have hungry kids everywhere." There are 45 to 60 students in PCCS who take home backpacks each week filled with food from Gleaners Community Food Bank. "After Christmas, you see layoffs happen," Hennessey said.  She said the number of students taking backpacks home increases at that time. She said the total number of students receiving backpacks also …

Help Patch Fight Hunger in Plymouth and Canton

Starting today, you can purchase and donate food to the Gleaners Community Food Bank during Patch's virtual food drive. Our goal is to collect $10,000 through Nov. 17 to help feed the area's hungry families.

The statistics are grim, especially for children. One out of four Michigan children lives in a household with food insecurity, meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from. In southeast Michigan, nearly 40 percent of more than 100,000 people receiving food assistance each week are children under age 18. Poor nutrition, particularly in the first three years of life, has profound implications on a child’s physical and mental health, development, academic achievement and economic productivity. Today Patch.com, through its 30 Michigan sites including Plymouth-Canton, is launching an online food drive to raise $10,000 by Nov. 17 to feed area families. This is the first virtual food drive for the Gleaners Community Food …

Community Financial Donates $2,000 to Local Food Pantries

The credit union held a chili cook off to raise the funds on Oct. 21.

The chili was cooking early with Community Financial Credit Union team members decked out in Michigan State University and University of Michigan gear recently, but it wasn’t for a football game, it was to raise money and food donations. The annual Community Financial chili cook off on Oct. 21 raised almost $2,000, which will be donated, along with the collected canned goods, to local food pantries. Nine different batches of chili were served up by team members and judged by co-workers and local community leaders. Team members also showed off their preference for the Spartans or Wolverines prior to the big rivalry game scheduled for the next day. Community Financial team members brought in non-perishable food items for the opportunity to “…
