Local Salvation Army Workers Assist First Responders

When accidents and fires occur, Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services volunteers assist emergency crews.

Amidst the flurry of sirens, flashing lights and fire hoses when a fire broke out Monday in a Plymouth Township home, a group of Salvation Army workers were offering their own support as crews battled the blaze. While these workers might not strap on oxygen tanks or enter burning houses, they provide crucial support by keeping first responders warm and hydrated as they exhaustively fought a devastating fire on a frigid, snowy night.  The crew is the Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services, and they respond to fires and major accidents, assisting both emergency crews and victims with an RV, called a canteen, stocked with hot coffee and cocoa, soft drinks, food and blankets.  Chuck McDougall of Southfield, director of the Eastern …

Plymouth, Northville Complete First Year of Fire Services Agreement

Plymouth leaders laud partnership with Northville.

Now one year into its joint fire agreement with the City of Northville, Plymouth city officials are calling the merger an "incredible move." The combined operation, which replaced Plymouth's existing partnership with Plymouth Township, launched on Jan. 1, 2012 with hopes of saving Plymouth money without sacrificing service. The move eliminated full-time firefighting crews in favor of a paid on-call system and the addition of a new downtown fire station. “I think the fire department consolidation was the boldest and most effective thing that we’ve done in the past 15 years,” Plymouth Mayor Dan Dwyer said in a news release.  “So far, it’s been absolutely outstanding for our city. Firefighters Extinguish Saturday Garage Fire in Plymouth

No injuries reported in blaze, while cause still unknown

About 30 firefighters helped extinguish a garage fire Saturday afternoon at the 100 block of Garling Street in Plymouth, according to a news release from the city. According to the release, crews responded at about 2:19 p.m. to see a garage with extensive black smoke billowing from the building and flames on the outside of the structure. Crews began battling the blaze, during which propane tanks stored inside the garage began exploding, the release said, and were able to get it under control by 2:47 p.m. The garage and two vehicles inside were reported a total loss, the release said.
