Here are the results from the 2013 Plymouth Ice Festival's College Carving Competitions.
Both individuals and teams were crowned at last weekend's Plymouth Ice Festival College Carving Competitions in downtown Plymouth. The competitions were Saturday and Sunday in Kellogg Park. This year's collegiate winners represent Henry Ford Community College, Oakland Community College and Macomb Community College. Photos: Plymouth Ice Festival comes to a close.
The 2013 Plymouth Ice Festival came to a close Sunday with a chilly afternoon contrasting the mild temperatures from the day before, which eroded many of the fest's interactive ice exhibits. Despite the weekend's inconsistent weather, however, crowds turned out Sunday, albeit in smaller numbers, for the final day of festivities as college ice carving teams crafted creations such as an octopus, bug and a rabbit chasing a dog. Ice sculptures succumb to warmer temperatures as crowds pack Kellogg Park.
One day after frigid temperatures welcomed attendees to the 2013 Plymouth Ice Festival, mild temperatures Saturday shortened the life of many works of frozen art in Kellogg Park. Canton entrepreneur Kim Torres' company Face Flair, of which Richard Simmons is a fan, has a stall in the 2013 Plymouth Ice Festival's market area.
To get a break from the cold air, 2013 Plymouth Ice Festival goers can step into the heated tent under The Gathering Pavilion. There, they can browse the stalls of various vendors. Kim Torres, of Canton, is there representing her 3-year-old company Face Flair by painting the faces of those who stop by. In addition to face painting, Torres also sells peel-able body art, which is a product line she designed, she said. One of Face Flair's fans is none other than fitness personality Richard Simmons. Torres said she and her family started an effort two years ago to get into shape and got tickets to his show. She said she wrote to him about her struggle. "He actually called my house," she said. Oakland Community College culinary students compete in the individual ice carving competition Saturday against students from other schools like the University of Michigan and Henry Ford Community College.
Ken Mallet, first year student at the Oakland Community College (OCC) Culinary Studies Institute, entered the 2013 Plymouth Ice Festival College Individual Carving Competition with his "Wolf in the Wild" design. Coach Gerneil Franklin, who has been an ice carving coach for six years, said it is Mallet's first time competing at the Festival. He, along with Doug Gahns, a coach for more than 15 years, and first-year coach Chris Kurtz, worked with the four students from OCC to prepare them for the competition. A more interactive Plymouth Ice Festival kicked off a weekend in downtown Plymouth on Friday with organizer Sam Walton and Eastern Michigan President Susan Martin "cutting" the ice ribbon with a chainsaw. Walton said today's festivities will include competitions at the AGA Nation rail jam and competitive ice carving. "We're going to have 35 college students coming out and we're going to be creating between 35-40 new sculptures between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (Saturday)," Walton said. Open skating will begin at 5 p.m. Friday on synthetic ice-like surface.
Visitors to the Plymouth Ice Festival this weekend can strap on a pair of skates and glide around Kellogg Park, surrounded by ice sculptures. This year, the Plymouth Ice Festival placed a skating rink in the park facing Main Street, which opens at 5 p.m. today. Rather than using real ice and hoping Mother Nature cooperates, however, the rink is made of a synthetic material that simulates ice. The surface, placed in interlocking tiles on a level wood foundation "It's like a white cutting board, basically," Anthony Bro of Peabody, MA-based Artificial Ice Events said. At 31 years old, a bigger and better Plymouth Ice Festival is set to kick off at 3 p.m. today in downtown Plymouth. The annual free ice-carving festival has always offered a visual feast with elaborate sculptures situated throughout Kellogg Park, but this year's event is as much about what there is to do as what there is to see. On Thursday night, crews were busy setting up structures, making snow and carving displays ahead of today's big premiere.
