The 2013 Plymouth Ice Festival will partner with local colleges and universities for the 31st annual college carving competition in Kellogg Park.
Attendees of the 2013 Plymouth Ice Festival, which takes place this Friday through Sunday in Kellogg Park, can watch live ice carving as college students compete to win in their sculpture category. Professional judges determine the winners, and placing a win at the festival means students can move forward to regional competition status. The College Individual Carving Competition is Saturday, and the College Team Carving Competition is Sunday. Demos, open riding among activities offered at downtown exhibit.
New this year to the Plymouth Ice Festival is the AGA Nation Rail Jam, which showcases thrilling snowboarding stunts in downtown Plymouth. Crews on Thursday were assembling the apparatus for the exhibit, complete with downhill ramps, rails and plenty of snow. The exhibit, located behind E.G. Nick's, will offer both demos showcasing competitive boarders and open riding for amateurs. The Plymouth Ice Festival begins Friday, Jan. 18, in downtown Plymouth. While there's plenty of fun for grown-ups (check the full list of events here), the weekend also is packed with kid-friendly activities: New this year to the Plymouth Ice Festival is a skating rink in Kellogg Park. The synthetic, weatherproof surface uses traditional ice skates, yet promises the ability to skate even if Mother Nature isn't cooperative. Skate rentals will be available on-site. The rink is open during the festival's operating hours, which are listed at the bottom of this story. The Plymouth Ice Festival begins Friday, Jan. 18, in downtown Plymouth. Heading downtown? Here's what you need to know: Friday, Jan. 18 – 3-10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 – 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20 – 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sculptures are available for viewing 24 hours a day and will remain standing after the event, weather-permitting. Pub crawl Saturday to stop at four downtown bars.
The 2013 Plymouth Ice Festival is still a week away, but downtown will get a taste of some early festivities Saturday with the Labatt Blue Frozen Pub Crawl. The pub crawl, which starts 4:15 p.m. Saturday at Panache 447 before moving on to E.G. Nick's, The Penn Bar & Grill and Sean O'Callaghan's, is sponsored by the Detroit Spartans, a Michigan State University alumni group. Emily Reetz from the Detroit Spartans said she hopes the event will "build energy and momentum" for the Ice Festival, which runs Jan. 18-20 in downtown Plymouth. While the event is open to the public, Reetz said her group is marketing the event to MSU alums throughout Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties who otherwise might not be aware of the Ice Festival. The Plymouth Ice Festival gets under way just weeks from now, running from Jan. 18-20 in downtown Plymouth. Apart from the chainsaws and scultors, however, there is plenty of fun to be had downtown during the (hopefully) chilly weekend. The festivities are preceded by a pub crawl in downtown Plymouth on Jan. 12.
