Annual WSDP-FM 88.1 Auction a Key Fundraiser for Students

The student-run radio station based at Salem High School has two big events this month.

by Bill Keith, WSDP manager Fundraisers are nothing new for school groups. Every week some group is selling gift wrap, candy, candles or some other kind of knickknack. As the manager of WSDP-FM 88.1 I’ve worked with our students to find unique ways to raise money for the station. We have two upcoming fundraisers that are very important to our future success. I can’t believe that this weekend will be the 23rd 88.1FM Radio Auction. It seems like only yesterday that we were bringing back the auction after a several year hiatus. The auction has become the biggest fundraiser for WSDP, the student radio station at Plymouth-Canton Educational Park. This year’s auction will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Area businesses have been …

Unanimous Vote for Plymouth-Canton Interim Superintendent

Jeremy Hughes is a former Dearborn Schools' superintendent.

Experience, political connections and the prospect of a unifying influence were behind the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools board of trustees' decision to hire Jeremy Hughes as an interim district superintendent. Hughes' experience includes five years as deputy superintendent and chief academic officer of Michigan's department of education. There, he helped revise state standards for teaching and graduation. Hughes was one of four candidates for the temporary job and the only one not already a district employee. The other three applicants: Philip Freeman, Pioneer Middle School's principal; Jim Larson-Shidler a certified public accountant and Plymouth-Canton's deputy superintendent of business; and Kurt Tyszkiewicz, principal of Tonda …

It will be difficult to restore their reputation; they've "let go"/illegally fired much of their talent already. Plus no University students are staying in Michigan, let alone this place of questionable character.   more ›

Plymouth-Canton's Craig Fiegel: Finalist for Kansas School District

The school district's superintendent is interviewing in Salina, KS, his home state.

Craig Fiegel, superintendent of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, is in Salina, KS, today for a job interview. Fiegel is among the finalists for the position of Salina School District superintendent, according to a story The Salina Journal published Thursday. The Plymouth-Canton school board hired Fiegel in 2008; in a 4-3 vote Sept. 28, 2010, the board decided against renewing his three-year contact. On Nov. 23, 2010, again in a split vote, the board suspended most of Fiegel's duties, reassigning the work to Deputy Superintendent Ken Jacobs. The four board members who voted against Fiegel — Judy Mardigian, John Jackson, Adrienne Davis and Dianne Gonzalez — have not been clear about why they are unhappy with Fiegel, other than to say the …

What a shame, losing a perfectly effective Superintendent. Ican only imagine how the antics of the 'unfair four' will hinder efforts to land a good superintendent. I am positive that any prospects will read newsarticles like this, comments and more as part of their research on the district. It's only hurting the children of PCCS and hope that more suitable boardmembers will be elected in the …   more ›

Around Canton: Week in Review

The arrest of a girls lacrosse coach, school budget and St. Patrick's Day.

Plymouth High School girls lacrosse coach – and Canton resident – Stephen Jay Nyquist was charged Wednesday with 12 counts related to child pornography. The 65-year-old Nyquist was arraigned Thursday at Plymouth’s 35th District Court on all counts. The charges include three counts of possession of child sexually abusive material, three counts of distribution of child sexually abusive material and six counts of using a computer with another to commit a crime. The past week also saw the Canton girls basketball team charge into the state semifinals, only to miss a chance at a state title by the slimmest of margins. After overcoming a strong push by Midland in the second half of Tuesday night’s matchup – with a 35-32 hold-on win – the Chiefs …
