Congressman critical of Obama's remarks.
Congressman Kerry Bentivolio, R-Milford, released the following statement Tuesday following President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address: “President Obama keeps trying to convince us that giving up our freedoms and letting the government make our decisions on how to run our lives is a sign of progress. He wants the government to tell us how to run our businesses. He wants the government to get between us and our doctors. He wants the government to take more of our nation’s hard earned money instead of letting us spend it for ourselves. All of these intrusions make us less prosperous, less healthy, and less free. “This evening we heard the same tired rhetoric from the president. From his speech to Congress in February 2009 to tonight…

There were several highlights during the inauguration ceremony. Tell us what you found to be most memorable.
President Barack Obama was sworn in today for a second term in office. The day was historic in that Obama is one of just a handful of men who have been re-elected to lead the United States. But also that his swearing in fell on the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr's birthday and in the 50th anniversary year of King's March on Washington to deliver the "I Have a Dream" speech. Today's festivities included a 19-minute speech from the president in which he gave a shout out to southeast Michigan when he said, "Our journey is not complete until all our children from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherised, and always safe from harm." It also included …

Congressman says he will 'be a strong advocate for gun owners.'
U.S. Rep. Kerry Bentivolio, R-Milford, criticized plans announced Wednesday by President Barack Obama indicating strict gun control measures. “President Obama lives in a city with some of the strictest anti-gun laws in the country and, yet also has one of the highest rates of gun violence," Bentivolio said Wednesday in a statement. "The best defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun who is trained properly. It’s important that we do thorough background checks to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them. However, it would be dangerous to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens who want to purchase a firearm." According to the White House fact sheet, Obama’s plan includes: Bentivolio also was …

President, Congress have just a few days to avert automatic tax increases and spending cuts.
On Thursday, Starbucks baristas from stores across the Washington, D.C. area wrote "come together" on all cups to encourage Congress and the President to come together to fix the fiscal cliff issue. For more information about this initiative and other ways to urge a fix, go to www.patch.com/fixthedebt. Congress and President Obama are racing against the clock this week as they make one last attempt to hammer out a deal to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff” the U.S. government is set to go over on New Year’s Day. Without a compromise deal to lower the deficit, the government will face a self-imposed deadline that triggers both spending cuts and higher taxes. Congress itself set the Jan. 1 deadline after failing to come to a budget …

President says proposed right-to-work laws give people "the right to work for less money" during an appearance in Redford Township.
President Barack Obama took aim at proposed right-to-work legislation during an appearance Monday in Redford Township. Obama waded into Michigan’s brewing labor battle that erupted last week when Gov. Rick Snyder said right-to-work legislation was on his agenda and union groups protested at the state Capitol in Lansing. "We should do everything we can to keep creating good middle-class jobs that help folks rebuild security for their families," Obama said Monday in a speech at the Daimler Detroit Diesel plant, according to the Huffington Post. Obama added that with right-to-work laws, “what they're really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money.” More protests are expected in Lansing on Tuesday as right-to-work …

The defining economic policy of the last decade, of course, was the Bush tax cuts. Bush and Congress, passed a large tax cut in 2001, sped up its implementation in 2003 and predicted that prosperity would follow. The economic growth that actually followed — indeed, the whole history of the last 20 years — offers one of the most serious challenges to modern conservatism. Bill Clinton and the elder…   more ›
