Mosquito Season Is Here

Plenty of snow over the winter and ample spring rains has provided plenty of standing water for developing mosquito larvae.

MSU Diagnostic Services and Michigan State University Extension have had calls about mosquitoes lately. As you have probably noticed, they are out in full force, and our recent warm evening temperatures have made them fully active. People have reported bloodthirsty clouds of mosquitos greeting them as soon as they walk outdoors. Expect them to be out in peak numbers for the next two to three weeks. Michigan is blessed with over 50 species of mosquitoes. These can be categorized into two basic groups based on their breeding habits. The first group might be termed spring mosquitoes. Spring mosquitoes produce a single generation of adults each year. Their larvae develop in “spring pools” in low lying areas that hold water from snow melt and …

What Should Happen to Central Middle School?

Visions for Vacancies: Central Middle School could close if the voters pass the $114.4 million bond on May 7.

Central Middle School could be closed if voters decide to pass the $114.4 million bond proposal on Tuesday.  Plymouth-Canton Schools plan to replace the school with a new building on district-owned property at Canton Center and Cherry Hill Roads in Canton. Because of its age, the condition of its infrastructure, and the dollars necessary to renovate it to today’s standards, the district determined the school should be replaced with a new facility. The district recently signed an agreement with Holbrook Development, LLC to purchase another recently closed school - Starkweather Alternative High School - to build new homes and condominiums.  What do you think should happen to Central Middle School should the bond proposal pass? Tell us in the…

Mulching Landscape Beds FAQs

As the weather warms and homeowners and landscapers become active, many questions begin to arise when it comes to mulching landscape beds.

Why mulch? Mulch can provide a range of benefits for landscape beds. Here are just a few: How much mulch should I apply? Deeper is not always better: 2 to 3 inches of mulch is adequate to get the maximum mulch benefit in most cases. If a site already has mulch from last year, a thin, 1-inch top-dressing is more than adequate. When mulching perennials in the landscape, take care not to spread mulch over the crown of the plants. What’s the best material to use for mulch? To a large extent, the “best” mulch material is in the eye of the beholder. Most organic materials such as ground bark, ground wood chips or shredded leaves can provide the key benefits of moisture conservation, weed control, thermal insulation and organic matter addition. …

Trees and flooding FAQs

Spring flooding is not uncommon in Michigan. Here are some ways to minimize the impacts of flooding on trees.

How long can trees stand being flooded? In late winter and early spring, many trees can handle a week or two of flooding without long-term problems. However, tree species vary widely in flood-tolerance. In fact, if we think about environmental stresses, trees vary more in flood-tolerance than any other trait. On one extreme, trees that are native to floodplains, such as cottonwoods, can withstand months of inundation. On the other extreme, upland trees such as pine, hickories and most oaks may be damaged after a week or less of flooding. How does flooding harm trees? Tree roots need oxygen in order to function. Normally, tree roots get the oxygen they need from air in the pores spaces in soil. When soils are flooded, these air spaces are …

Local 'Mortgage Mom' Sees Positive Real Estate Trends

Kelly Belcher started processing loans when she was in high school; now, it's her full-time career working out of the Plymouth Key Mortgage office.

Farmington Hills resident Kelly Belcher writes loans for a living and says more of her clients are moving on up.  "I see a lot of people selling their homes, seeing a profit and upgrading," said Belcher, who blogs at michiganmortgagemom.com. "My husband and I bought a house four years ago when the market was down, and we have equity now." Working out of the Key Mortgage office in Plymouth and from her home, Belcher made an early decision to pursue a career in real estate. "Early", as in high school. "I started working as a processor after school," the Ladywood High graduate said. "I bought an investment property when I was 19 ... I'm very into real estate.
