Submitted by the Detroit Red Wings: Detroit Red Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock and Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland successfully defended their bell ringing title on Tuesday as the four duos of Red Wings personnel brought in a grand total of $24,438.69 for The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign at stops throughout Metro Detroit, including Plymouth. During a two-hour span of bell ringing at Hiller’s Market in downtown Northville, Babcock and Holland raised $13,462 for the nonprofit, which included an anonymous $5,000 donation. Local hockey fans can catch two former Red Wings in action tonight in Plymouth Township. Chris Osgood of Plymouth and Manny Legace, both former Red Wings goaltenders, will man the red kettles instead of the goalposts from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday to raise money for the Salvation Army. The City of Plymouth turned on its lights Friday, while the Salvation Army Plymouth Corps kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign fundraiser at Kellogg Park in preparation for the holidays. The city flipped the switch on its boulevard trees, lit with amber-colored LED bulbs, for the holidays amidst Christmas carols and music from the Salvation Army band. The boulevard tree lighting event is now in its third year in downtown Plymouth, Mayor Daniel Dwyer said, and its giving-back spirit is "what Plymouth's all about." The sound of bells ringing at the Salvation Army's red kettles scattered throughout the park punctuated the event's musical ambience as donations began to flow in from area residents. Tree lighting, Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign kick off tonight at Kellogg Park.
Downtown Plymouth's holiday boulevard tree lighting is 6:30-7:30 p.m. today in Kellogg Park. The event also marks the start of the Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign, its massive annual charity event. The Salvation Army band also will make an appearance, bringing seasonally appropriate music to patrons.

The Salvation Army Plymouth Corps' Christmas fundraising campaign for Plymouth, Northville, Canton and Belleville has collected $278,539, according to a news release from the organization. This accounts for 88.4 percent of its $315,000 Christmas goal from this past holiday. According to the news release, the organization's Red Kettle drive has collected $205,699 of its targeted $225,000. Its campaign saw bell-ringers at a variety of businesses in the four communities and included noteworthy bell-ringers such as Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock and general manager Ken Holland in Northville and players Drew Miller and Valtteri Filppula in Plymouth Township. Plymouth Corps seeks volunteers as holiday fundraising reaches final stretch.
A visit to Plymouth and Northville by some Detroit Red Wings personalities to help ring bells helped the Salvation Army Plymouth Corps catch up with 2010’s donation pace, but the organization still is behind pace for its 2011 goals. Maj. Dan Hull of the Plymouth Corps said the group has raised $94,080 so far this year with its Red Kettle Campaign and is at 41.8 percent of its 2011 goal of $225,000. Overall, the group’s fundraising has totaled $115,514, at 36.7 percent of its goal of $315,000, including the Red Kettle Campaign. Sandy Kollinger, volunteer and special events coordinator, said that these numbers are on pace with 2010, but behind what is needed to reach this year’s goals. Members of the Detroit Red Wings will be sporting red kettles Friday in Plymouth, Northville, Birmingham and Troy to raise money for the Salvation Army, according to a news release from the team. Coach Mike Babcock and Ken Holland, the team's executive vice president and general manager, will collect donations from 3:30-5:30 p.m. outside Hiller's Market in downtown Northville.
