Snail Mail for Seniors, a Canton-based nonprofit, held a card-making session Thursday at the Canton Public Library.
The holidays can become a dull time for seniors in nursing or assisted living homes who often don't get visitors or enough time to spend with family and friends. Volunteers of Snail Mail for Seniors create cards to make their days brighter. Young and old alike gathered Thursday at the Canton Public Library for a Valentine's Day card-making session. The tables were littered with pink hearts and red card-stock. Snail Mail for Seniors provided the supplies and the volunteers went to work. "I usually end up making them by myself," said Maria Jagalla, of Plymouth. She…

Snail Mail for Seniors is a nonprofit organization that sends greeting cards free of charge to senior citizens in nursing or assisted living homes in Michigan. The group focuses on seniors who do not receive mail or many visitors. September marks the five-year anniversary for the organization. She said she sends cards to 35 senior homes and 20 personal homes, and there are about 800 seniors who get cards each …

Cathy Donaldson may have moved to Plymouth, but her Canton roots are deep.
Cathy Donaldson lived in Canton for decades before moving to Plymouth. So, it's not unusual to spot her around town, as she was Saturday, promoting a charity she founded four years ago. Snail Mail for Seniors. The work is simply a matter of putting cheery greeting cards into the hands of people who might otherwise not get any mail. Donaldson delivers cards she and many volunteers make (or buy and donate) to area nursing homes. Some cards go out with Meals on Wheels volunteers. If you've ever wondered what to do with leftover seasonal cards -- consider donating them to Snail Mail for Seniors. Donaldson's efforts provide cards for holidays throughout the year and, in between, include general "thinking of you" cards. She's also Canton Patch's…

Cathy Donaldson spread out card-making materials in Canton Public Library's Purple Room on Saturday and didn't have to wait long for help in making greeting cards. Donaldson, a long-time Canton resident who currently lives in Plymouth, founded Snail Mail for Seniors four years ago as a way to cheer up people who living in nursing homes or are mostly homebound. This time of year, she's in a hurry to get as many holiday cards out as possible. Many of the cards made on Saturday featured Christmas trees and other iconic images. Other cards, however, emphasized the winter season, with such embellishments as blue foam snowflakes that volunteers could glue to the cards. Some of Donaldson's friends helped on Saturday -- Sue Kalis, Joan Mountford …
