Expect 2-7 Inches of Snow Today in Plymouth and Canton

Snow will start falling in the afternoon and continue into the evening.

Last year's wimpy winter will not be a repeat for Michigan, if this week is any indication. Following Christmas Eve's traffic-clogging snowfall—which ranged from a dusting to several inches in Metro Detroit—residents of Plymouth, Canton and surrounding areas can expect significant snow today. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the area, and is predicting up to seven inches of snowfall, starting at about 1 p.m. today. Flurries could begin overnight, turning into a steady snowfall by the afternoon. The chance of snow, according to NWS, is 100 percent. Forecasts called for temperatures to drop into the high 20s by 10 a.m. today, and winds are expected to pick up throughout the day, gusting as high as 26 …

Snow May Fall Next Week

It's possible that there will be snowflakes mixed with the rain over southeast Michigan Tuesday and Wednesday.

Fall may be over sooner than we thought. It's possible we'll see snow early next week. Although it remains too early to say, there is a small chance for snowflakes mixed with rain, said meteorologist Cory Behnke, of the National Weather Service (NWS) Detroit/Pontiac Weather Forecast Office in White Lake. "As far as southeast Michigan is concerned, we're going to have a secondary cold front track through the Great Lakes region probably on Tuesday night," he said. He said it's possible there will be snowflakes Tuesday night and into Wednesday. "We don't have it in the forecast," Behnke said. "But I can't completely rule out the fact that we won't see any snowflakes, either." The average first date of measurable snow fall one-tenth of an inch…

I am Sooo hoping for another winter like last winter. The older I get, the less tolerance I have for dealing with snow.......And if no one else will say it...... I think that woman smearing that red goop on her face looks more like she's 67!   more ›

POLL: Are You Glad or Sad Winter is Wimpy So Far?

Halfway through the season, we've had little snowfall and averaged 30 degrees.

Show of hands: Who went out without gloves this week or rode with a car window open? You're not alone. January just went out like a lamb, a two-months-early calendar twist that's unusual here. So is an average Metro Detroit winter temperature of 30.7 degrees, six weeks into the season, and snowfall barely above nine inches – compared to nearly 18 inches in January 2011. "It is surprising," National Weather Service meteorologist said this week from the monitoring station at White Lake. It recorded a Tuesday reading of 56 degrees and forecasts high temperatures of 40-44 degrees through Monday. In Rochester, unseasonal weather won’t stop a Snow Daze benefit for the Animal Care Network this Saturday afternoon. "We plan to host our annual Snow …

I'm loving it so far. I almost bought a snowmobile at the beginning of winter. I'm glad I held off. The snowblower is still sitting there unused. We were able to do some outdoor work at the cottage that I thought I'd have to wait for spring to do. I've tilled up a portion of my backyard twice to get it ready for new grass seed. This is the first time in my fifty some years that I can remember a …   more ›

Plymouth Reminds Residents to Keep Sidewalks Clear

When snow falls, city reminds residents to clean driveways and sidewalks.

While temperatures this winter have remained relatively mild, snow could be just around the corner. The City of Plymouth clerk's office is reminding residents this winter to keep sidewalks and driveways clear. A memo from the city follows: This will serve as a reminder of your responsibility to keep all sidewalks and driveways clear of snow and ice throughout the coming season. Snow-covered walkways are not just a nuisance; even a minimal snowfall is hazardous and creates serious public safety issues. As a property owner and/or tenant your neglect exposes you to potentially dangerous and costly liability concerns. Property Maintenance Code Section 62-89 requires every property owner and/or occupant to remove or have removed any snow and …

Recapping 2011: Extreme Weather

Ice, floods and heat periodically challenged Canton residents during 2011.

Canton Township was, by turns, frozen, soggy, scorched but at times we basked in perfect weather. The worst, at least for Cheryl Dell, was the July 11 storm that knocked down at least five trees in her Lilley Road property -- but on May 29, hundreds of people were disappointed when extreme rain caused the first-ever cancellation of the Canton Cup Games. Wet Weather Annoying, but Watch Out for Ice

Canton Township emergency management planner Kathy Rich said some safety guidelines do apply as the weather changes.

The ground is saturated and the temperatures are falling. Snow is on the way. But those two changes aren't what's on Canton Township emergency management planner Kathy Rich's mind. She's thinking about ice. The National Weather Service has issued predictions that rain will continue until about 9 p.m., then mix with snow until 2 a.m., after which only snow will continue to fall. Winds will likely gust up to 28 miles an hour while temperatures will hover around 30 degrees overnight. "I don't know how cold it's going to get or how fast this cold front will come down, but if it gets cold fast, we're going to have puddles turning to ice," she said. The snow, she said, will be "that heavy, wet snow. It's not going to help — it's going to be …

National Weather Service Alerts Drivers to Snowy Surprise

More than 3 inches of snow in some parts of Canton by 10:30 p.m.

What was supposed to be a half-inch snowfall after a rainy day is turning into much more and wreaking havoc. More than 150 DTE Energy customers are without power according to DTE’s outage tracking website. A multi-car accident on I-75 late Saturday evening, near the M-57 intersection and Clio and Mott roads (Exit 131), has closed all southbound lanes on I-75. And the National Weather Service has updated its earlier snow forecast to predict up to three inches of snow overnight. A flood advisory remains in effect for low-lying areas, such as near the Lower Rouge River, though more in the Inkster and Dearborn areas. The changing temperatures have also caused areas of patchy fog. Weather statements issued Saturday evening included cautionary …

Snow Slows Traffic in Canton, Causes Other Hazards

Police and firefighters are busy responding to calls for help, though no major accidents have been reported.

The snow that snarled driving Tuesday afternoon and evening will continue until at least 9 p.m., with up to 5 inches accumulation, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service's travel advisory cautions drivers that visibility will be low and driving will be difficult. The advisory is in effect until midnight. At Canton Cinema, shift manager Jennifer Polzin expects a slow night. “It’s weird,” she said. “When it snows, business slows. When it rains, business picks up.” She said her drive to work Tuesday evening was slow but safe. “I didn’t see any accidents on the way in, but I would be surprised if there wasn’t one somewhere,” she said. Canton police officers and firefighters are busy responding to fender benders and slip…
