Canton Gold Medalist Allison Schmitt Drops Puck Today for Whalers

Olympic star to participate in ceremonial faceoff today as Whalers face Saginaw at Compuware Arena.

The Plymouth Whalers will welcome a local Olympic gold medalist tonight as the team opens the second half of the Ontario Hockey League season. The Whalers get back in action this week with a pair of home games at Compuware Arena: Today's game is the Whalers’ annual Kid’s Day Matinee.  Young fans will celebrate mascot Shooter’s birthday. Gold medal-winning Olympic swimmer Allison Schmitt – from Canton – will participate in a ceremonial face-off. Plymouth practices at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Compuware Arena. Practice is open to the public and media.  London went into the Christmas Break with a 21-game winning streak. They host Windsor on Thursday before coming to Plymouth on Saturday.  London has taken two of the three games played against …

Canton Hurdler Jeff Porter Advances to 110-Meter Semifinals at Olympic Games

Porter finishes third in his heat to advance on Day 11 of Olympic Games.

Canton's Jeff Porter of Team USA advanced today in the 110-meter hurdles, according to the Detroit Free Press. Porter finished third in his heat with a time of 13.53. Porter, a former University of Michigan standout, is married to Great Britain hurdler and fellow former U-M standout Tiffany Porter, who missed the 100-meter final today by .08 seconds, giving an early end to her Olympic competition this year.  Jeff Porter will advance to the semifinals Wednesday at 2:15 p.m., with a chance to compete in the final at 4:15 p.m.

Allison Schmitt, Team USA Set World Record, Win Gold in 4x100 Relay

Canton native Allison Schmitt anchors final leg of record 4x100 relay to win her third gold medal this week.

Canton native Allison Schmitt earned her fifth medal — and third gold — of the 2012 Olympic Games in London today, anchoring Team USA's women's 4x100 relay. According to the Detroit Free Press, Schmitt anchored the final leg of the race, helping propel the Americans to a world-record time of 3:52.05.  According to Fox News, the team shaved 0.14 seconds off the time set by China at the 2009 world championships. Schmitt, a 2008 Canton High School graduate, was a late addition to anchor teammates Missy Franklin, Rebecca Soni and Dana Vollmer. Teammate Jessica Hardy had to withdraw from the event after making the 50-meter freestyle final, the report said. It was the first time the United States earned gold in the event since 2000.

Canton's Allison Schmitt Eyes Individual Gold Today in London

Schmitt finishes second in morning's heats before today's 400-meter freestyle final.

Already armed with an Olympic bronze medal this year, Canton's Allison Schmitt will look to add to her hardware collection today when she competes in the 400-meter freestyle final, the Detroit Free Press is reporting. Schmitt finished second in this morning's heats ahead of today's final at 3:18 p.m. EST. Schmitt, a 2008 Canton High School graduate, won bronze Saturday while anchoring the Team USA 400-meter freestyle relay team. Check local TV listings here.

Allison Schmitt of Canton Wins Bronze in 400-Meter Freestyle Relay

2008 Canton High grad earns bronze as relay team sets U.S. record on Day 1 of Summer Olympics in London.

Allison Schmidt kicked off the first day of Olympic competition Saturday by earning bronze. The 22-year-old 2008 Canton High School graduate was part of the women's 400-meter freestyle relay, along with Missy Franklin, Jessica Hardy and Lia Neal, the Detroit Free Press reported. The team's total time of 3:34.24 set a U.S. record in the event, the Free Press reported. Schmitt will swim this morning in the prelims of the 400 freestyle. For more, check the Detroit Free Press.
