After a whirlwind tour of the Big Apple -- and a performance in Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade -- the Plymouth-Canton Marching Band is scheduled to arrive home today.
Alan Adler embodies the spirit of most parents of Plymouth-Canton Marching Band members -- the pride and joy of all enthusiastic Band Dad and Band Moms. Adler's daughter, Gena Adler, plays clarinet for the PCMB. While Canton Patch band-mom blogger Peggy Fenwick has been chronicling the adventures of the band and their supporter in New York City, Adler and many others stayed home, doing their best to catch a glimpse of the the marching band's performance on television. Lisa Flood is the sort of person who will stop to help a stray animal. She's taken strays into her home, too. But now, the Canton resident is trying to find the kind strangers who helped one of her pets after an accident. The stray cat she took in and named Jenks was injured after being hit by a car earlier this month, Flood told Canton Patch. "My kitty died from internal injuries before the emergency vet could even see him, so this event has devastated my family," she wrote in an email to Canton Patch. "Knowing that the people who were with him in his last moments were such kind people really does bring some comfort." Because she didn't know who the Good Samaritans were, Flood posted a note on Canton Patch's Facebook page. "Sending …

Four senior band members with a reminder of how to see the band in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
Among the dozens of Plymouth-Canton Marching Band members performing in Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade today are four seniors: drum major Grace Wine, bass trombonist Jason Jakary, trumpter Matt Kempfer, baritone saxophonist Michael Wolf and clarinetist Michael Fluegemann. The five student musicians recorded today's greeting on Monday, just before boarding buses to New York City and this morning's performance in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Jakary, of Plymouth, is a Salem High student who distinguished himself this year musically by being selected for the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. He'll march in the halftime performance of the All-American Bowl in San Antonio, TX, on Jan. 7, 2012. Follow the band's New York adventure …

A tom and hen visit a Rochester Hills home – for dinner?
Wild turkeys are common sight throughout Michigan, one that Rochester Hills resident Ruthann Bajorek welcomes. "One of the joys of living in Rochester Hills is the easy access to wildlife – though not always a blessing," Bajorek said. "These turkeys apparently misunderstood when we said we were having turkey for Thanksgiving. They showed up in our yard a little early for Thanksgiving dinner. What kind of wildlife have you spotted in your yard or neighborhood? To email this photo, just look for the EMAIL button above the headline. To print this photo, see PRINT above. Quirky, heartwarming traditions and thoughtful additions create a treasured holiday.
To catch up on Megan Swoyer's first 10 steps of the “turkey day” planning process, read the full series. Thanksgiving is turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy. It’s pulling on warm sweaters and indulging on warm pies. It’s Jell-O, football, wine toasts, good china and whipped cream. But it’s also rutabagas and Neil Diamond music. Yep. On Nov. 24 the Chisholms of Huntington Woods tuck their forks into a not-exactly-popular-but-totally-traditional rutabaga dish, while the Cherry family of Macomb Township taps their toes to a special Neil Diamond tune. It’s those quirky traditions and absolute must-dos that make Thanksgiving our own. My own “it’s-not-Thanksgiving-until-we-do-this” tradition involves a couple of wax figurines. Every year in my …

The Plymouth-Canton Educational Park band is the first from Michigan invited to perform in Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.
Members of the Plymouth-Canton Marching Band piled into tour buses and headed to New York City on Monday night. The band, comprising 175 students, will perform in Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade — and tour the city before returning home Saturday. The students, their teachers, the parent-chaperones and other family members — 341 people in all — will tour the Big Apple, see The Lion King on Broadway, maybe buy hot dogs from a street vendor and endure marathon bus rides as part of the round trip. "One of the challenges is when we get off the bus at 6 a.m., we're having breakfast and starting our tours," said Peggy Fenwick, mother of percussionist Ryan Fenwick, trip chaperone and Canton Patch's band-mom blogger. "There's no check-in to our …

These handy tips from the turkey trenches will help you with the last few crucial days of preparation.
These handy tips from the turkey trenches will help you with the last few crucial days of preparation. To catch up on Megan Swoyer's first nine steps of the “turkey day” planning process, read the full series. Chef Jim Bologna of The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham could be considered a kitchen boy scout: He’s always prepared, especially when hosting a feast at home with family and friends. Here are some of his tips: Keep appetizers frozen until the big day: Bologna also is big on having cheese and crackers with some cured meats on hand — that’s “always a win and they will hold for quite some time, and go great with wine.” Plan, plan, plan: “Write your menu so that most of your items can be done ahead,” he said. “Most if not all of the …
