Teddy Bears to Hit the Ice to Salute Nation's Heroes

Plymouth Community United Way, Plymouth Whalers team up for charitible Teddy Bear Toss.

The Plymouth Community United Way and the Plymouth Whalers are hoping it will rain a torrent of teddy bears after the OHL hockey team scores its first goal against the Kitchener Rangers on Dec. 1, at Compuware Arena, 14900 Beck Road, Plymouth. This year, the 13th annual Teddy Bear Toss will not only provide toys to brighten the holidays of children in need, but also will pay tribute to the five branches of the United States Armed Forces with a Salute to Our Heroes. After the second intermission, local representatives, on behalf of the military branches, will receive certificates of thanks. Active and veteran soldiers with military ID will be admitted to the game free of charge. Discounted $10 tickets are available for their family members…

United Way Seeks Volunteers to Clean Yards on Nov. 3

Plymouth Community United Way looks to help senior citizens and those with disabilities.

Do you want to make a difference by helping a senior citizen or person with a disability? Are you a senior or a disabled person who could use a hand to rake leaves? Plymouth Community United Way (PCUW) is looking for volunteers to clean yards and do light chores in Plymouth, Plymouth Township and Canton on Saturday, Nov. 3. Volunteers will meet on the day of event at The Salvation Army Plymouth Corps, 9451 S. Main Street, south of Ann Arbor Road. Check in time is 8 a.m., when the PCUW will provide a continental breakfast. Volunteers are asked to bring rakes, garden tools and gloves. PCUW will supply the yard waste bags. United Way Kicks Off 2012 Campaign

Group kicks off fundraising effort in Plymouth, Canton and surrounding area.

By Linda Chomin, Plymouth Community United Way Plymouth Community United Way has kicked off its 2012 Campaign to raise money for partner agencies and grant recipients who provide basic needs and resources for residents of Plymouth, Canton and the western Wayne area. The agency is reaching out to individuals, businesses, industry, and professionals to make a donation or run a campaign at the office. Everyone benefits when families are financially stable and healthy. Last year, in addition to funding partner agencies, Plymouth Community United Way organized Make a Difference days to clean yards of senior citizens and people with disabilities, and collected new hats, scarves, mittens, and gloves, and food for those in need. Income Guidelines Change for Emergency Food Program

Group provides low-income Plymouth and Northville residents with canned and non-perishable food items.

As of Jan. 1, income guidelines have been adjusted to allow more individuals and families to be served by the Emergency Food Assistance Program, or TEFAP, according to a news release by the Plymouth Community United Way.  The group provides low-income Plymouth and Northville residents with canned and non-perishable food items. The next distribution is scheduled for Jan. 19 at St. Kenneth Catholic Church, according to the news release. All recipients must be pre-registered. According to the news release, this is a supplemental food program so it can be used with other assistance programs. Bridge Card holders automatically quality, but need to pre-register. United Way Provides Hats for Homeless, Those in Need

Plymouth Community United Way's Hats for the Homeless program begins.

The Plymouth Community United Way has kicked off its 2011 drive to collect hats for the homeless and those struggling economically, according to a news release from the organization. Through the end of the year, the agency is accepting new hats, gloves, scarves, and socks for men, women and children. Last year, the Plymouth Community United Way distributed more than 1,400 items, the news release said. Donations can be dropped off at Plymouth Community United Way, 960 W. United Way Offers Grants for Basic Human Needs

Organization rewards 501c3 nonprofits who provide shelter, food and utilities for those in need.

The Plymouth Community United Way (PCUW) has grants available for 501c3 organizations that provide basic human needs such as food, shelter and utilities, according to a news release from the organization. According to the news release, nonprofits should not presently be funded by PCUW and deadline to apply is Nov. 25. Grants will be awarded by Dec. 30. Applications are available at the office, 960 W. Ann Arbor Trail, Suite 2, in Plymouth. Those seeking more information can call (734) 453-6879, ext. 4.
