'Love and Honor' Film Adapts City Official's Experience Going AWOL

Film, which premieres Friday at the Penn Theatre, stars Liam Hemsworth as character based on Plymouth Mayor Pro Tem Mike Wright.

Plymouth Mayor Pro Tem Mike Wright has a word of caution for anyone who is an acquaintance of his friend Jim Burnstein, a screenwriter from Plymouth Township whose credits include Renaissance Man and D3: The Mighty Ducks. "Be careful what you tell him, because you have no idea where it's going to end up," Wright said.  For Wright, a story he told Burnstein of going AWOL while serving in Vietnam sparked Burnstein's next movie idea: A story about two soldiers who flee to Michigan in the midst of the Vietnam War. Love and Honor, the byproduct of Wright's story, premieres theatrically following a 7:15 p.m. engagement Friday at a sold-out Penn Theatre. Film With Plymouth Ties Hits On-Demand Services This Month

'Love and Honor,' by Plymouth Township screenwriter Jim Burnstein, is loosely based on experience of Plymouth Mayor Pro Tem Mike Wright.

Jim Burnstein thought he had heard all of his friend Mike Wright's best war stories from his time in Vietnam until his friend told him about the time he went AWOL. For Wright, mayor pro tem for the City of Plymouth, his AWOL experience was out of necessity—lodging costs were too high while on R&R in Hawaii and he and a friend had to find cheaper living. For Burnstein, a screenwriter from Plymouth Township, his friend's story provided enough inspiration to be his next big idea for a movie. While the events in Love and Honor—currently on video on demand on DirecTV and available Feb. 14 on major VOD services—differ from Wright's actual AWOL experience, the basis of a soldier going AWOL while on R&R was a suitable starting point for Burnstein…
