The Farmington Hills-based chain is sleek, vast in its offerings, but can be tough on the wallet.

The evolution of the pizza parlor over the decades has been a unique one. Aside from the cheeseburger, there isn’t any other American delicacy that has the ability to stand alone as a meal in and of itself, one that families and groups pick and pull at until their stomachs are content. Somewhere along the line, purveyors of the pizza pie began adding more and more to their menus. But Plymouth’s Happy’s Pizza has taken the pizza parlor concept into a whole new realm. While pizza is definitely its main attraction, it’s hard to not get distracted by the sheer wealth of menu items offered. The Farmington Hills-based company has tapped into a demand for one-stop options in take-out dining that has largely gone undeveloped, aside from the …

There’s something about autumn and comfort food. The two just go together. Everyone has a favorite, but in Michigan one of the fall staples that most people would agree upon is the pasty. Pasty shops are rather scarce in the southern part of the state, though. They can be found, but they tend to be smaller, and off the beaten path – with one exception: Piepers Fresh Baked, Savory Pies. Tucked into the Northridge shopping center on the east side of Haggerty Road, just south of 8 Mile Road – mere feet from Trader Joe’s – is this quaint yet polished purveyor of crispy, hand-held pastries. Overview: The pasty is similar to a calzone in shape, though about half to a third the size. Most are filled with meat (ground beef, steak, chicken or pork…

Mahi Mahi Fish Grill is a new restaurant that just opened in Novi at 25875 Novi Road just south of Grand River Avenue. As the name implies, the restaurant features an assortment of seafood, as well as chicken, grilled gourmet sandwiches, soup, salads and steak. Atmosphere: The restaurant has a casual atmosphere with large pictures of several menu items on the wall and aquatic-themed decorations with a hint of a Hawaiian feel. Diners order their entrees at the cash register and are given a number to take to a table where a server delivers the food. Tables are also available in an outdoor patio area for warm weather dining. Bar: Alcohol is not served here, but there is fresh Hawaiian lemonade and orange drinks, as well as fountain drinks, …

One of Novi's newer restaurants is Tin Fish, which is located in Twelve Oaks Mall at 27862 Novi Road. This ambitious bar and restaurant has its own separate entrance to the parking lot to accommodate diners when the mall is not open. Atmosphere: The interior of the restaurant is dark with an open upper level and an elevated stage for live entertainment that sits above the expansive bar. Colorful lights decorate the interior, and there is an outside patio for drinks or dining in the warmer weather. There is often live entertainment, which is not overly loud, but it's something to keep in mind if you are hoping to have a lot of conversation. Bar: The bar features an extensive wine list and includes “a martini for every mood,” according to …

There is something reassuring about a restaurant that keeps things simple. Corporate establishments lean so heavily on style that substance often winds up on the back burner. It’s an unfortunate casualty of the trade. But Karl’s Cabin – Plymouth’s quaint, Up North-style log-cabin eatery – has bucked that trend, settling into a niche in the restaurant business that favors local roots over widespread recognition. This niche is where family-owned establishments often flourish, where regulars are treated like royalty, and newcomers are made to feel more like part of the community than coldly calculated commodities. Either way, Karl’s Cabin feels like home. The food is unpretentious yet creatively crafted, the service goes beyond the expected…

California Pizza Kitchen offers tasty salads, soups and appetizers too.
Although it has the word "pizza" in its name, California Pizza Kitchen at 27866 Novi Road in Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi is anything but your typical pizza place. There are soups, salads, a variety of appetizers and a full bar at this comfortable location which has a covered outdoor seating area for warm weather dining. And of course there is pizza from a traditional cheese pizza for $10.79 to a wild mushroom pizza for $11.99 to a pear and gorgonzola pizza for $12.49. There are also a number of thin crust pizzas and speaking of crust a honey-wheat whole grain crust is available on any pizza by request. Appetizers range from a delicious Tuscan hummus for $6.49 to a unique “small tasting” of guacamole infused with beans and corn and served with…

Inside the Baronette Renaissance Hotel, at 27790 Novi Rd., is the Toasted Oak Grill and Market. You can enter through the lobby of the hotel or through its own door from the parking lot into the bar area and market, which the hostess jokingly referred to as the “Barket.” There is seating for the bar as well as a deli counter and bottles of wine for sale which can be purchased along with a Michigan mitten-shaped, hand-carved wine crate that holds four bottles of wine. The dining room is a cozy wood-paneled area highlighted by an over-sized glass-encased stone fireplace. I just happened to look up and notice the ceiling has a plaid décor similar to a Burberry print. Popular for a mid-day meal is the “market lunch” for $12 which includes …
