Recipes: Christmas Cookies Galore

As you prepare for the holiday, try a few of these Christmas cookie recipes.

Here are a few of my favorite Christmas cookie recipes. Most of these are easy to make and kid friendly. Enjoy! Ingredients: Crush the cookies in a plastic bag with a rolling pin or in a food processor until the cookies are almost powder-like. Mix in the softened cream cheese and stir well. You can make as many different sizes as you want or have space for. Microwave the candy coating and be ready to apply right away, while it is still hot. Once it hardens, you won't be able to cover the cookies. Add your favorite sprinkles while candy coating is still soft. Set cookies on wax paper and place in freezer for 10-15 minutes, at least. Enjoy! Ingredients: The first step it to melt one stick of butter over medium heat in a large skillet. Next …

10 Tips on How to Sell Your House Fast

Putting your home on the market? A local realtor shares selling tips on how to get that purchase agreement signed quickly.

Declutter, freshen and – cover up the tarantulas. That's the advice of at least one local expert for homeowners looking to sell their house quickly Spring is the best time to sell your home, according to lendingtree.com. If you’re getting ready to sell, realtor Ginny Fisher of  Hall & Hunter Realtors in Birmingham says to focus on first impressions. “The advice I give to all my sellers?" Fisher said. The Dirty Dozen: 12 Tips for Spring Cleaning

We peek into the wash buckets of some of the areas savviest spring cleaners, who reveal 12 great tips to help clean up your act.

When interior designer Brian Clay Collins  of Grosse Pointe embarks on his annual spring-clean at his northern Michigan home, it’s with glass cleaners, vinegar and lint-free towels in-hand, among other things. “The absolute requirement for clean wood floors is warm water with a bit of white vinegar, used with a big sponge rinsed frequently,” said Collins, who owns Brian Clay Collins Design. “This is all done, alas, on hands and knees!!” Like hundreds of other homeowners who now are focusing on sprucing up, freshening and deep-cleaning their homes, Collins swears by favorite products. For example, he prefers Glass Plus for cleaning glass “becaue it’s ammonia-free, so less likely to damage the silvering on mirrors.” Dr. Jennifer Bonde, owner…

Freeze Warning Tonight Follows Snowflakes

Temperatures are expected to dip into the 20s, threatening sensitive spring plants.

You weren't seeing things when you saw snow blowing around Tuesday afternoon and now there's another freeze warning in effect from midnight to 8 a.m. Wednesday. The National Weather Service says temperatures will fall through the early morning, reaching low temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s by sunrise. That means damage is possible to sensitive vegetation, including newly budded plants and trees. So haul those houseplants back inside and think about covering up your more sensitive flowers and plants. And cross your fingers for good luck – it might not help, but it certainly can't hurt.

Cover Early-Sprouting Daffodils, Other Bulbs

If the temperatures dip below freezing these next few weeks, cover them up until their normal blooming time arrives.

If you planted daffodil or tulip bulbs last fall (I planted 110 “Pink Charm” and “Tahiti” daffodil bulbs), it’s a pretty good bet that you’re already seeing a couple inches of plant poking out of the ground. Out my living room window, I see a sea of lime-green spears. Thanks to a mild winter with unseasonably high temperatures, sprouting bulbs is indeed a common sight, said Ryan Youngblood, owner of Artistic Landscape Associates in Rochester. “We’ve had a few clients call with concern, as they have noticed the new tender growth starting to appear,” added the landscaper, who planted a few thousand daffodil bulbs last fall at various client homes. Youngblood explained that bulbs blooming are dependent on climate. “They have  an internal …
