Letters to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: County Commission Candidate Thanks Supporters

James Amar, who lost to Shannon Price on Nov. 6, thanks supporters and congratulates opponent in letter to editor.

I want to thank the members of my family, and the volunteers and supporters who participated in the campaign I conducted to become elected Wayne County Commissioner for the Tenth District.  Although I was unsuccessful in winning the election, I am extremely grateful to the people who stepped up to lend a hand and the confidence they had in me as a candidate.  In addition, I want to thank the thousands of persons who voted for me and I deeply appreciate the civility and respect I was treated with by so many of the residents of the district who gave me  the time to let me introduce my self when I knocked on doors and informed them I was a candidate for Wayne County Commissioner.  I offer my sincerest congratulations to Shannon Price, his …

New Canton Board of Trustees Takes Oath of Office

New trustees, incumbents swear in at ceremony at Canton Township Hall.

The faces on the Canton Township Board of Trustees might look different when the board hosts its first meeting next week, but Township Supervisor Phil LaJoy said it will be business as usual. Newly elected trustees Steven Sneideman and Thomas Yack took their oaths of office Tuesday at the Canton Administration Building Tuesday by Judge Michael Gerou from the 35th District Court. Sneideman and Anthony will join LaJoy, treasurer Melissa McLaughlin, clerk Terry Bennett and incumbent trustees Pat Williams and John Anthony. While Yack, who once held LaJoy's seat, has extensive experience on the board, Sneideman is beginning his first term after becoming the top vote-getter in a tight Nov. 6 vote, in which he, Yack, Williams and Anthony narrowly…

State Sen. Patrick Colbeck: It's Time to Come Together

State Sen. Patrick Colbeck (R-Canton) urges unity in op-ed for Patch.

In the wake of the 2012 General Election, there have been many calls for our state and our nation to come together in a renewed spirit of bi-partisanship.  For all of us who attest to the wisdom in the phrase “united we stand, divided we fall,” it is clear that we all need to come together. We have a simple question to answer before this goal can become a reality, though.  What are we to unify behind?    Shall we unify behind an individual?  How about a single political party?  As a student of history, I would recommend that we avoid either of these approaches as they tend not to end well.  In their stead, though, I would submit that the best choice would be to unify behind the core principles that all of us have unified behind since our …

Curson Wins Partial Term for 11th Congressional District

David Curson beat out Kerry Bentivolio to serve the rest of Thaddeus McCotter's term.

Republican Kerry Bentivolio may have won the general election Tuesday to represent Michigan's 11th District in Congress, but he lost the special election to fill the remainder of Thaddeus McCotter's term. Democrat David Curson beat Bentivolio and will serve the rest of McCotter's term, which ends Dec. 31. Bentivolio will take over in January for a two-year term. The vote to fill a partial term was added to the ballot when McCotter resigned from the position in July after it was discovered that his campaign failed to turn in the requisite number of signatures to run for re-election this past Tuesday. His seat has been vacant for the past four months. Curson received 159,267 votes, or 51 percent of the vote, and Bentivolio received 151,740 …

Good Vs Evil

Shannon Price is an establishment candidate. He is apart of the good old boy club. I am a republican, but could never support the establishment system whether democrat or republican, that has destroyed every level of government. Our trusted system of government has been corrupted by these types of politicians, from the top down. From the feds, to the state, to the counties, cities, townships, and…   more ›

Dian Slavens wins re-election bid against Joe Barnabei.

Rep. Dian Slavens (D-Canton) easily retained her 21st District House seat against challenger Joe Barnabei (R-Van Buren), according to unofficial results. "I think people are happy with what I've done in Lansing in this last term," Slavens said at an Election Day party Tuesday at Canton Coney Island. Slavens said her focus in her next term will be on investing in education and helping middle class families. She said she also hopes to focus on emphasizing government accountability in the wake of a ballot-rigging scandal in the House this year. Slavens said she is excited to get started on her next term. "I wish the best to (Barnabei) and his family and I look forward to moving forward and working for the 21st district," she said.    Dian …

Canton Elections 2012: Sneideman, Yack to Join Canton Board of Trustees

Former school board president Sneideman, longtime township supervisor Yack join incumbents Pat Williams and John Anthony.

One year removed from failing to keep his seat in a close Plymouth-Canton Board of Education race, Steven Sneideman had something to smile about Tuesday. Sneideman, a former school board member and past school board president, led all candidates in Tuesday's election for the Canton Township Board of Trustees with nearly 22 percent of the vote.  Sneideman, a Democrat, will join the board with Republican Thomas Yack, a former township supervisor seeking a return to the board. Republican incumbents Pat Williams and John Anthony also earned new terms, while Republican Gregory Demopoulos fell short in his bid to retain his seat on the board.  "It’s surprising," Sneideman said of his vote total. "I was just hoping for fourth place." Sneideman …
