Canton Woman's Love for Pooch Leads to Pet Massage and Concierge Business

PAWSitive Pet Massage and Concierge will hold an open house at the Plymouth Cultural Center on Saturday from 1-4 p.m.

Canton resident Jennifer Williams was relaxing one evening a few years ago while petting her dog Wednesday when she felt something unusual - a bump.  The lump turned out to be cancer, and after talking with a groomer on ways to help Wednesday, Jennifer began to look into pet massage therapy classes, which in turn led to the founding of PAWSitive Pet Massage and Concierge last October.  "The benefits (of pet massage) are for flexibility or if a dog is experiencing any type of anxiety issues," Williams said. "It releases toxins out of the body and increases blood flow. Anything that it does for a human, it does the exact same thing for an animal."  Wednesday, now 12-years-old, has arthritis and bone spurs in her front legs. "She couldn't …

Plymouth Cigar Shop Manager Shows How to Cut and Light a Cigar

La Casa Plymouth Manager Christina Vega demonstrates the process for beginners.

Canton resident Christine Vega has worked at La Casa Plymouth since it first opened under the name La Casa de la Habana in 2000 - so she's fairly used to answering questions for first-time smokers.  "I always steer them towards something mild, and usually, nothing too long," she said. "You don't want them smoking this giant cigar. And then, usually, I just give them some pointers, like 'make sure you eat first - very important' because sometimes that might effect your stomach if you're a newbie and not used to it." Vega said just make sure you have good company, then sit back and enjoy it.  Just make you have a lighter handy, a cutter handy, and you're good to go," she said. "Really, it's a very simple hobby."

I have a pretty good idea that you would Mr. Bentley. I have been following your "blog" posts for some time now and I am under the impression that you certainly would do an "I told you so" to the board for closing the fire station. Even though it is not the boards fault. Have you realized that the fire station was planned to stay open but your so heroic firefighters kept on wanting to be money …   more ›

Woody, Michigan's Official Groundhog, Issues Apology

On the first day of spring, the weather forecast calls for snow, snow and more snow.

It's the first day of spring, and Woody, Michigan's Official Groundhog, who resides at the Howell Conference & Nature Center, has faced the fact that this year's seasonal prediction was incorrect.  According to the National Weather Service, the forecast for Wednesday night is more snow showers and a low around 19 degrees. Thursday's forecast is a 50 percent of snow showers, cloudy, with a high near 32 degrees. Not your average spring weather.  Like all female woodchuck prognosticators, Woody is not afraid to admit when she's wrong. And although she correctly picked the Baltimore Ravens to win the Super Bowl, she is avoiding March Madness in its entirety.  Some observers recalled Woody's hesitation that morning, when she exited her house, …

Plymouth Honors City Employees Who Served in Afghanistan

City Commission honors municipal services worker Anthony Atiyeh, police officer Jeff Jones, who returned safely from Afghanistan.

Plymouth police officer Jeff Jones was back on duty Sunday for St. Patrick's Day, wearing a different uniform than he had sported for much of the past year.  Jones, an Army reservist in the Jackson-based 303rd Military Police Company, returned from Afghanistan in January after deployment in May 2012. Jones and fellow soldier Anthony Atiyeh, a municipal services employee for the city, were honored Monday at a Plymouth City Commission meeting. Mayor Pro Tem Mike Wright, a Vietnam veteran, issued a proclamation for the veterans, lauding their service accomplishments and safe return home, and issued both a commemorative coin bearing the Operation Enduring Freedom ribbon and a message thanking them for their service. Jones said while he was …

Belly Busters Owner Has Perfect Drink Recipe for St. Patrick's Day

David Arafat from Belly Busters in Plymouth shows how to make an Irish Car Bomb drink.

The Irish Car Bomb, a popular adult drink at bars around St. Patrick's Day, can easily be made at home with these easy tips from David Arafat from Belly Busters in Plymouth.  The drink, which combines a stout beer, whiskey and Irish creme, resembles a chocolate milkshake when properly mixed. To get started, Arafat says, you'll need Guinness or a comparable stout beer, Jameson or a comparable whiskey and Bailey's or a comparable Irish creme. You'll also need a pint glass and a shot glass. Check the video for the step-by-step instructions, and be sure to drink it at once, or else the dairy in the Irish creme will start to curdle in the cup.  As always, drink responsibly and legally.

Do You Support the Plymouth-Canton Bond?

Voters will decide on a $114 million bond at the polls on May 7. Tell us why you'll vote yes or no.

When Plymouth-Canton voters head to the polls May 7, they'll consider a $114 million bond proposal to replace an aging Central Middle School, replace buses and upgrade technology throughout the district. The $114 bond proposal, which the district says will not increase the district's current millage rate of 4.1 mills if passed, will replace Central Middle School with a new building on district-owned property at Canton Center and Cherry Hill roads in Canton, install fiberoptic networking throughout the district, add tablet devices and laptop computers to each K-12 student, make building improvements and gradually replace the district's outdated fleet of buses. If the bond is approved, voters would opt to hold the rate from an existing …

What about the declining enrollments in the Middle Schools? The 5 year student projection (not including the loss of students in 7th & 8th grade to charter or private schools) would be aprox. 3646 total middle school students with the currents middle school capacity of 4475 that would be almost a 20% decline in students. Almost enough to close Central Middle School by the fall of 2017 (projected …   more ›
