National Teacher Appreciation Day means it’s a good day to stop and recognize our teachers for all their hard work and efforts.
It's National Teacher Appreciation Day, and in Plymouth-Canton Schools, that means it’s a good day to stop and recognize our teachers for all their hard work and efforts. On the Plymouth-Canton Patch Facebook page, several parents and community members took the time to mention just a few of the people in our school district who have had an impact on their child's life. "Miss Neil's. Math teacher at Discovery Middle School," Gillian Marceau wrote. "She knows how to teach!!! And she treats her students with kindness and respect." "Mr Thomas - Plymouth high school (IPC) a teacher who shows his love and relates to his students, someone to really look up to and can inspire anyone he meets," Cerys Daniels wrote. "To this day I still relate back …

All residents in district invited to forum to help district hire its next superintendent.
All Plymouth-Canton Community Schools residents are invited to take part in a public forum tonight to help the district hire its next superintendent, according to a notice published on the district website. The forum will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. tonight at Canton Public Library. Last month, the Board of Education hired Ray and Associates, an executive search firm, to help the board identify a new superintendent. Officials from the search firm will ask residents questions in an effort to identify characteristics the community would like in the next superintendent. Ray and Associates also will be conducting individual stakeholder meetings on Nov. 13. Based on the information collected, the search firm will report its findings at a Special …

The annual event Friday at West Bloomfield High School features keynote by Plymouth-Canton Schools graduate, awards, public screenings in evening.
A former Plymouth-Canton Community Schools graduate will be among nine film and TV pros from around Metro Detroit on Friday who will encourage teen filmmakers already following their paths. Scott Kodrik will kick off the day with a keynote address. The 40-year-old screenwriter, director and owner of a special effects company in Redford graduated from Plymouth-Canton schools in 1989. About 30 videos by high school students are entered in the ninth Orchard Lake Student Film Festival, a day-long event with workshops, awards and evening screenings for the public. For aspiring directors, producers and actors, it's a small-scale version of the Sundance Film Festival, a career-making indie showcase that ended Sunday in Utah. "Having work judged …

Plymouth-Canton school board members will discuss proposed cuts, $18 million from the $162 million annual budget.
Parents trickled into the auditorium at Discovery Middle School early Tuesday night prepared to hear the main issue on the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools' board agenda -- further discussion on a multi-faceted proposal to cut $18 million from the district's $162 million budget. Deanna Willis of Canton arrived around 5:30 p.m. because, she said, "I didn't want to end up sitting on on the floor." That's what happened to about a dozen people who attended last week's standing-room-only meeting at the district's office board room. "Maybe it was overkill," Willis said, shrugging. The room is set to accomodate nearly 400 people in the audience, with reserved seats for speakers and board members. Willis is accompanied by her two sons, Chase, 10…

Dear Editor, I am writing in response to the latest decision by the Plymouth-Canton school board on the subject of the wearing of the kirpan (religious knife) by Sikh students. I am affronted by this decision on more than one level. The first issue I have with this is that we have a statewide policy of ZERO tolerance on the carrying of weapons to any public school. To create an exception to this rule by saying that the kirpan is carried for religious purposes is absurd and is pandering in an ill-advised attempt to be politically correct. Trying to mitigate objections to this decision by including criteria that the knife will need to be in a sheath sewn to an article of clothing, that the blade must be of certain length and dull, and …

Students deliver wild cheers for Red Wings star, get tips on the game and practice with equipment donated by the Red Wings Foundation.
Wild cheers greeted Red Wings great Nicklas Lidstrom on Wednesday afternoon when he stepped forward to share tips on exercise and nutrition with students at Field Elementary School in Canton. Lidstrom, introduced by Red Wings radio play-by-play announcer Ken Kal, talked about the importance of nutrition and exercise before sharing hockey tips and practicing with groups of youngsters. "I started playing hockey when I was 7-years-old. Ice hockey, that is," Lidstrom said. He started playing field hockey when he was "3 or 4." Lidstrom said he practiced his hockey skills a lot as a child, after his homework was done. "I'm still having fun. I'm a young 40-year-old who still loves to play hockey," he said. "It's good to stay active, whether you'…

Plymouth-Canton Citizens for Diversity and Inclusion organized the event to
Anne Marie Graham-Hudak would have been happy to see 50 or 60 people show up to learn more about the Sikh faith Thursday evening. She was delighted when nearly 75 attended the event at St. Thomas a’Becket on Lilley Road. Her group organized the forum after a Bentley Elementary incident last month involving a fourth-grade Sikh boy. He was at recess when his kirpan, a religious item representing a sword of mercy, fell out of his clothes, and a parent complained to the media. Plymouth-Canton Schools’ policy prohibits look-alike weapons, but the issue is complicated because it is a religious item. The boy has stopped wearing it, but his family and school officials continue to look for a solution, according to district spokesman Frank …

The holidays are over, winter has hit full force, and more than a few of us are wondering how we'll make it to spring without dying of boredom. Fortunately, the Plymouth-Canton Community School District offers a few alternatives through it's community education program. Have you ever wanted to learn professional cake frosting techniques or how to create a fruit bouquet that rivals Edible Arrangements? What about ballroom dancing, or salsa and cha cha? There are even fitness classes like Zumba and winter golfing classes at Fox Hills Golf Course. "Our goal is to provide opportunities for all community members to be involved in enriching activities, from the physical activities like dance and exercise to hands-on skills like knitting and …

I think it's just sad to let go of Fiegel, I went there for 3 years, best time of my life! The teachers are fun, but strict, there was never a favorite thing to do, or a hobby...the whole experience of even going to that school was enjoyable! You could talk to the teacher as if they were your aunt or uncle, and have a blast learning new things. I get along with little kids easier than anyone else…   more ›
