ReplySo, she is a "George Bailey" in real life. What a poetic footnote to one of my favorite movies.

On the article Patch and AOL Send Hurricane Sandy Relief Trucks to Long Island, New Jersey

When a company does it, it's fine, imo. It challenges other companies to be good corporate citizens and help the communities in which they work and serve. And one of the great things about America is that many companies do!
AOL's Patch sites are in hundreds of communities around the country and the company is stepping up to make a tangible difference in some of the hardest hit Patch communities in NYC and NJ. AOL is encouraging employees to get involved in relief efforts and is not making them take vacation hours to do it. I think that's pretty great. We have offices and colleagues in NY and NJ that don't have power yet, so employees in Dulles and Baltimore are pretty glad we can do something meaningful to chip in. So, when my employers says "so, today, your day job is secondary, go buy relief supplies, go help pack boxes or load a truck" I'm grateful to work for such an employer. Thank you AOL, keep up the good work!

ReplyDelighted to read Scott Surovell is thinking like this. Every time I drive through the parking lot for a sports event I think that a county that values STEM education is letting such a wonderful resource go unused. Certainly we should consider opening it up to the public periodically. I believe people would be willing to pay for events just as we do elsewhere. Train amateur astronomers how to use the system and let them volunteer their time to host events. Planetaria are almost magical places. I have happy memories of my childhood visits to them. They helped inspire my love and appreciation for the cosmos.

ReplySounds like a nice event. Too bad it's at a time when most children would be unable to attend. Maybe it could be repeated some evening or on a Saturday?

ReplySeeing the ice room photo makes me wonder what year the Potomac ceased to be a reliable source for block ice. Huge quantities would be harvested, sawn into regular blocks and hauled to the large houses, taverns and inns of the area.
Ice was an American export during the 1800's--mostly from New England.

On the article Rep. Moran Arrested with George Clooney in Protest at Sudan Embassy

ReplyWell, I for one am glad to see Congressman Moran doing more than most others to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, an isolated region in Sudan's north, not part of South Sudan, where people are being systematically attacked and denied humanitarian aid and where famine appears likely in 2012. For more information on Congressman Moran's co-sponsorship of the “Sudan Peace, Security, and Accountability Act of 2012,” please visit: http://mcgovern.house.gov/index.cfm?sectionid=15§iontree=168,15&itemid=621

So Mulligan Road gets a do-over? ;-) When this project is complete it will relieve a lot of drivers from having to head South to go North, and will cut down on the traffic using Lockheed Blvd by Huntley Meadows to get to Kingstowne. I'm sure the new Wegmans will love this direct access from Mount Vernon!
