Mission

New Morning School offers an extraordinary learning environment where we nurture children to their full potential as critical thinkers, creative problem- solvers, and responsible citizens. We teach children utilizing an individualized curriculum that employs the latest educational and brain-based research, with an emphasis on hands-on learning. Our multi-age classrooms feature a low student-to-teacher ratio and incorporate direct parent involvement. We create community in a child-centered setting that builds self-confidence and cultivates self-expression.DescriptionNew Morning School is certified by the Michigan State Board of Education, licensed by the Michigan Department of Human Services, and is a member of the Association of Independent Michigan Schools, the National Middle School Association, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The school can enroll 110 children during the school year and offers summer programs for another 200 students.... The school has been recognized nationally as a model cooperative.

New Morning School instruction is based on the work of Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget and is informed by the most recent brain research. The common denominator for families selecting New Morning School is the desire for personalized education. Each student's ability, learning style and needs are met while still being a member of a classroom. This is possible by maintaining a 12:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Certified teachers nurture and guide the students in the core subjects of reading, math, writing, spelling and social studies. Specialized teachers complement the learning with science, Spanish, art, music, computers and gym.

New Morning School uses a multi-age classroom setting. The students are assessed and grouped based on ability and able to progress from there. The student and teacher meet for periodic goal setting sessions to determine the next level of classroom materials and skill groups. Within this defined curriculum and using developmental plans, students participate in planning their daily schedule. This gives the student many opportunities to develop time management and organizational skills. These skills coupled with academics give students confidence and prepare them to take ownership of their learning.

Perhaps the most unique quality of a New Morning School education is the level of parent involvement. Parents serve as teacher's aides, weekend cleaners, fundraisers, and are intimately involved in the day to day activities of the school, as well as guiding its strategic direction. Parents serve on the board of directors, volunteer to coordinate fundraisers or special events, serve as Girl Scout leaders and coaches, and are welcome in the classroom any day at any time. At New Morning School, we believe that children thrive when parents, teachers, and school administrators work together in cooperation. Numerous research studies confirm the benefit of parent involvement in children's academic success.
