Plymouth Man's Remains Found in Hawaii

Brian Patrick Murphy was 67 when he went missing in 2007.

The remains of a Plymouth man who went missing six years ago while hiking alone on a volcano in Hawaii have been found by police.

Hawaii Island police identified the remains as Brian Patrick Murphy of Plymouth. They were discovered last week at a remote location at the 12,000-foot elevation of Mauna Kea.

Murphy was 67 when he was reported missing from that area in December 2007. The remains were identified through dental records.

According to Big Island Video News, a Native Hawaiian cultural hiking group found the remains during a pilgrimage near the summit of Mauna Kea last week.

A Honolulu Star-Advertiser article from 2007 reports that Murphy went hiking alone up the volcano, despite warnings from a state ranger about a possible blizzard. The blizzard later produced snowdrifts up to 10 feet deep.
